User talk:The Brain

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi, you can talk to me here!
I'm new to editing Wikipedia, (06,Jan,2005) so please don't mistake my edits for vandalism or opinion. I'm working on developing a NPOV.

[edit] Female Circumcision

The edits you made to Female Circumcision seem to support your belief that the practice is not supported by the Quran more than they support the article's flow and NPOV. I'm not reverting the edits, but you might go back and see if there is another place to put your information. The paragraph in which you put your edits was originally intended to show that many African Muslims, including clerics, believe that the Qu'ran demands sunna. Would you please go back and make sure that both your position "only ignorant Muslims believe in sunna" and the position of North African-- especially rural Egyptian-- Muslims are both fairly represented?

Thanks!

--Defenestrate 16:52, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Added a more NPOV. I think my use of jargon was confusing. --The Brain 01:46, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Please vote

Please consider voting at:

Wikipedia:Conspiracy_theory

to rename articles that use the pejorative term "Conspiracy theory" to denigrate the content of the article.

Do the titles of WP articles generally pass partisan judgment on the subject under discussion? Should they? BrandonYusufToropov 02:59, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

For your hard work transliterating the suras of the Qur'an.
For your hard work transliterating the suras of the Qur'an.
And for your transliteration of dozens (hundreds?) more articles!
And for your transliteration of dozens (hundreds?) more articles!

The Brain,

Great job adding the Arabic to those suras! The articles really needed it. Thanks also for your touchups to those articles. Keep up the good work! – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 13:05, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

And again, your hard work is inspiring! Thanks for doing the grunt work that most of us aren't able to do. My hat's off to you. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 12:58, August 21, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Reversions

Hello. I looked at the page you mentioned, and I agree that the verse you added helps the article, so I put the verse back in. I also left a note on the article's talk page Talk:Women in Islam saying why I put the verse back in. If Lao Wai disagrees, hopefully he will discuss it there instead of reverting again.

Sometimes people remove changes I make, and it's always frustrating, but there are some good ways to handle it. One good way is to ask an experienced user for help, which is what you did. Another good idea is to leave a message on the article's talk page explaining why you think the person's change was a bad idea, and saying that you plan to change the article back in a few days if no one objects. It's important to be polite and not insulting when you do so. Say "I think this wording would be better" instead of "You are discrediting the Qur'an!", for instance.

To revert, click the "history" tab to see the page's history. Then click on the date of the better version, and you will see this older version of the article. Then click the "Edit" tab, and you will be editing the previous version. You don't have to make any changes - just leave an edit summary saying that you're reverting, and explaining why. It will save the old version over the newer one. That's how you revert. If you have problems with this, let me know.

Thanks, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 04:34, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Baphomet

Baphomet is being sneaky. There is no user with the name User:Baphomet. That's why no edits show up in the user history. His actual username is User:WholemealBaphomet. His sig file signs the wrong name, but you can find out the user's real name by looking at the edit history of a page he edited. – Quadell (talk) 19:29, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] BC, AD, BCE, CE, AH, etc

There has been lots of debate on what date format to use, and Wikipedia has been unable to agree on a standard. Because of this, new articles can use whatever date format is appropriate, but they ask that no one go through and change a bunch of articles.

About Arabic -> English translators, I've wanted one of those for a long time. Apparently there isn't a good one on the Internet, sadly. – Quadell (talk) 12:37, September 7, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Can I edit your comment in Talk:Fatwa?

Hi,

Thanks for contributing to the Talk:Fatwa page. Is it ok if I merge "Who can issue a fatwa?" with "Who can issue a Fatwa:" and also edit your answer to the following:

Being born and raised Muslim Sunni and having been a Sufi of North African Tariqas for 12 years I think I can answer this, I can go to a Cleric and ask him a mundane question about ritual purity and technically it's a Fatwa. More complicated issues like, is Sulman Rusdie attacking the religion therefore it's ok to kill him takes a scholar to answer. Now a Fatwa is merely an OPINON or an interpretation of a Qur'anic passage, and it is NOT binding. So when I watch a Jihadist on TV, he's no scholar or any of that, say: kill, you know where he's coming from. While he is entitled to his opinion, which might Technically qualify as a Fatwa, he's no scholar, and the Fatwa has little impact if any.

North African Sufism is different from Persian and Turkish Tariqas because the practitioners are native speakerss of Arabic , so it relies heavily on prayers that are border-line magical, I'll try it when someone starts an article about it.--The Brain 03:19, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Islam and Slavery

I've had a look at the article for deletion page, and the discussion seems to be fairly civilised. I don't think I need to contribute to it. Andjam 11:02, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

The article vote is over, and it seems to be leaning to merge. If you (as the creator of the article) could merge it, it would be appreciated. Yuber(talk) 15:15, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hosni Mubarak

Yes, it's probably politically motivated. I'll keep an eye on it. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 00:19, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes I know. The article needs cleaning too. Don't worry about this. We can find a way to make this less problematic later. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 23:49, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal pending at 9/11 conspiracy theories

I have officially proposed to split the 9/11 conspiracy theories article, with the two most in depth areas being moved to separate articles at Allegations of Jewish or Israeli complicity in 9/11 and Allegations of U.S. government complicity in 9/11. I feel this will help alleviate the problem of the main article being too large and allow these two distinct concepts to be discussed in depth separately. Further division may be in order in the future, but I feel this is an important first step. Please check out the discussion at Talk:9/11_conspiracy_theories#Proposal_to_split_this_article. Thank you. [edit] Hosni Mubarak

Just not enough edits to protect. Sorry. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 14:13, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Dude, I've been following your edit history on the Mubarak page and I need to ask you: What the hell do you have against Mubarak? I don't know if you are Egyptian or not; if you're not then don't believe all you see in Al Jazeera and others since they emphasize the negative because it attracts more viewers. Furthermore, you don't live in Egypt and hence cannot accurately judge the situation.

On the other hand, if you ARE Egyptian, which you probably are, you know very well that Egypt was transformed in the last twenty years. If you compare statistics of life expectancy, communications, and electricity from 1981 till now, they have sky rocketed. Look at Egypt following Sadat: a president has just been assassinated, economic conditions were so bad that people rioted when the price of bread went up by 5 cents a couple of years earlier, and at that time we hadn't yet got Taba back from the Israelis (which by the way was accomplished under Mubarak) I completely agree with you: the state of democracy SUCKS in Egypt, and a lot more needs to be done. Poverty and unemployment still persist and frankly speaking, when you sit with people in Egypt, there is likely to be a lot of complaints about the state of affairs in Egypt. But if you're Egyptian, there's improvement and you know it: turn to any of the unofficial newspapers and criticism of the president and his son is there like it has never been before.

Please be objective when editing. For example, I am an Egyptian Christian and am proud that the January 7th day was delcared a national holiday by President Mubarak, which you just ERASED, instead choosing to italicize "three" years to highlight how much time it took for Mubarak to release Pope Shenouda from exile.

In conclusion, please try to be objective when editing this page. Thanks.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Kursi wiki 216x210.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Kursi wiki 216x210.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 22:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I WONDER IF....

As per your comment that a pic of Mohammed would 'offend' Muslims, I wonder if you'd extend the same courtesy to Christians or Jews? I doubt it somehow, Atheists tend to be totally one sided in their love of Islam and hatred of Christianity.
