Throwing shapes is an Irish slang term for acting tough or putting up a front. For example, threatening a person by aping "karate chops" at them, without actually knowing karate, would be an example of "throwing shapes."
Throwing shapes is the act of making box-like punching motions in the air, as performed during a rave or at a club.
"Throwing Shapes" is also the name of a song by British group Dirty Vegas
The term is referenced in the song "Shapes" by Seattle group The Long Winters, where the narrator tells his subject, "I'm counting on you to throw more than shapes."
