The police service of the United Kindgdom started in its modern form in 1829 with the introduction of the Metropolitan Police. Since that time, due to various Acts of Parliament the numbers of seperate police forces in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland has risen to well over 200 forces at the beginning of the 20th century. This number has gradually been reduced, resulting in larger police forces. As a result many police forces have been abolished over the years.
In its present form there are forty three Home Office (territorial) police forces in England and Wales. Eight forces in Scotland and one territorial police force for Northern Ireland. There are a further small number of police services throughout the United Kingdom with specialised remits, such as the British Transport Police, Dock police forces and so on. A full list of current operational police services can be found at the following link. List of police forces of the United Kingdom
In late 2005 the government announced a further reorganisation of police forces in England and Wales. Any force with less than 4,000 officers is likely to be abolished and merged to form larger strategic forces. The Home Secretary will decide on the future of many forces in 2006
