It's just a request, and I think a valid one. If a wiki is completely drowned in sources then it becomes unreadable. On the other site, it doesn't matter. Anyway, do what you like - I'm asking nicely, not trying to dictate policy! -- prat

Zoe is correct. Wikipedia is not the place to advertise your site. The rules are clear about External Links so lets keep sources unbiased and neutral in point of view.
Wikipedia, the encyclopedia, is supposed to be drowned in resources as people come here for that same reason.And that is to learn Hip Hop language skills

Hey, I'm happy to drop the external link! I didn't put it there. Originally I had a single source line pointing to it at the bottom of the page. I thought that was what we were supposed to do - though most wikis don't have sources listed. Someone else waltzed in and put a big "EXTERNAL LINK" up, which I don't particularly like. Furthermore, I was planning to keep this page orphaned until I had finished transcribing from my site, and just keep the source at the bottom... but after others linked to it I gave up and put it on Buddhism under 'See also'. Seems to get a lot more interest now... anyway, I'll keep on plugging. -- prat

I'm wondering about including other dates surrounding the life of the Buddha himself -- the year he renounced his life as a prince, the date of his achievement of nibbana, and so on. What about the dates of the first two gatherings after the Buddha's death? Also, I believe an entire volume (How the Swans Came to the Lake) that discusses how Buddhism came to North America. Is there something similar available for Europe?

Please check the time of third buddhist council. It can't be 309 BC as Asoka ruled from 273(or 269) to 232 BC. -somdip

The Buddha's birth date is given as 563 BC. Many sources (e.g. use google and "buddha birth death date" to check) have different dates but common ones for his birth are either 623 or 624 BC and 544 BC. Now the difference between these is about 80 years and it seems that some historians have been confused by the fact that Buddhists count from the Buddha's death whereas Christians count from Christs birth. I suggest that Buddhist sources that give 624 BC are in fact correct and that he died in 544 BC. -- User:RayTomes

As a Buddhist, I've read that Sakyamuni Buddha was not THE first buddha, but merely another Buddha from the long lines of Buddhas.

I think Buddhism on Wikipedia is a lost cause, not directly because of the type of person writing the articles, but because of the ridiculously complex and contradictory nature of virtually everything associated with the subject. Depending on which tradition you follow there can be either no Buddhas around right now, or just one, or countless trillions (google the 'sukhavativyuha sutra' to witness "the" Buddha referring to many many many - ad infinitum - other Buddhas before him) Perhaps what we need is a more clear distinction to be made between Nakaya, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, but then we'd need to subdivide these into every monastery that has existed in each of these 'sects'. But I don't think the internet, let alone Wikipedia, is big enough to contain an intelligible amount of information about Buddhism, you realise this as you start trying to learn about it.... I'm going to shut up now, as I have not said anything remotely useful. -ALEXXXTH 8th Feb 0005GMT
