- Russ's band went head-to-head in a competition with Howard Stern's band the Losers on an episode of Stern's radio show. The judges ultimately crowned Stern's band the winners.

In various interviews, the show's writers have described their occasional clashes with Russ over realistic behavior for a Vulcan, with Russ typically insisting on following continuity.
- Russ played the trooper combing the desert who exclaimed "We ain't found shit!" in the movie Spaceballs.
- He also appeared as a human starfleet officer on the bridge of the Enterprise B in Star Trek: Generations.
- He made a brief appearance in 2007 in the CBS drama Without a Trace as a consultant from the National Transportation Safety Board.
- In 1988 action-adventure series The Highwayman', Russ played D.C. Montana, a character sharing a name with with regular Trek writer D.C. Fontana.
