[edit] Seeking adoption?

Hi,

If your seeking adoption, I don't have a sea of time but I'm willing to take another adoptee if that's ok with you. Do you have any specific questions or things you'd like to talk about? I'm not really in to video games though, and I certainly don't have experience on wikipedia about it. I do have a prior history of AoE-addiction :-D

greets, --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 23:18, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't understand exactly what you mean, but let me try: you can click "history" above any article. This gives you a list of previous versions. Experiment with that page, e.g. by comparing version. Also, if you want to revert the changes of, let's say, a vandal who has put the word "penis" in the article, you can (1) click the last correct version (2) click "edit" (3) save it, ignoring the warning: all later changes are lost, and this was your goal, i.e. reverting the vandal's words.
You can also add articles to your watchlist (by clicking "Watch"). This allows you to follow changes on a set of articles.
If this doesn't answer your question, try me again (:-D) or click Help on the left, or type {{helpme}} on your userpage and another friendly wikipedian will come to assist you, or read for example Help:Editing.
--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 23:58, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Aha, you're talking about "articles for creation". Well, the procedure is explained on that page, but it's something for experienced users... Most content on Wikipedia is not created in this way, but just by people boldly creating new pages. If you really want to clear that backlog, just try to follow the procedure explained to the right of that page (click one of the lists below to find articles), but it'll take experience to decide what should be an article and what not. Does that answer your question?--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 00:19, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi,
I'm taking a long WikiBreak until February, if you want another adopter meanwhile feel free to remove the userbox and change it to {{adoptme}}. Good luck!

[edit] Age of Empires III Military Units

Hi Tomas. I didn't propose that this article be deleted - just commented that it has been deleted before. Lists of units in games are often deleted as fancruft. The content does not belong on the Age of Empires III (which I would be very glad if you contributed to - we need all the help we can get), but it is likely to be deleted as a separate article. If the quality of the content can be improved dramatically (eg. changing some sections from lists to prose?) the article might be less likely to be deleted. Good luck :D. Ck lostsword|queta!|Suggestions? 16:21, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

I'd also like to add something: At one time, the article included its own article for units and buildings, and it got to the point that there was just way too much information for the article. WP:NOT states that Wiki isn't a game manual, and we should keep that in mind when writing the page, as we don't want to give everything away. I'm fairly sure a passer-by doesn't really want to know the exact gathering rate of a Coureur de Bois, now would they :) Kareeser|Talk! 06:27, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
There were. One of the two got prodded as fancruft, and now I am leaning towards minimizing the content of the article as well. Kareeser|Talk! 01:12, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adopter on Holiday

Hi there are I saw that your adopter has gone on holiday. If you feel the need and would like a co-adopter - don't be afraid to put the Template:Adoptme back on your userpgae. Cheers Lethaniol 23:41, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tomas - see no one has come and offer adoption, not sure why. I have some more time on my hands now, so I can adopt you if you like. Either leave a message here or on my talk page. Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers Lethaniol 10:48, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption Confirmed

Right Adoption confirmed. Well I expect you know how this works - if you have any questions just ask. Can help out with technical or policy stuff, how to deal with other users (not just with big stick!) and can read over any work if you want a second opinion. Just leave a message on my talk. Look forward to hearing from you. Lethaniol 18:59, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Userbox migration

Hi Tomas,

Have come across this a couple of times but as I do not make Userboxes it does not affect me. Suggest you look at at least the first sections of Wikipedia:Userbox migration and its talk page Wikipedia talk:Userbox migration.

The basics are that controversial or biased userboxes / templates are moved out of main space - i.e. the encyclopaedia, into a user's subpage which is considered private. Therefore keeping the upstanding of Wikipedia - eh upstanding. If you are still confused or have a particular problem with this give us a shout. Cheers Lethaniol 16:40, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Centipede (1998 PC Version)

Hi TomasBat,

Right have had a quick little look - and got a few suggestions. Am normally quite critical but take heart this is a good foundation to the article - which probably needs content addition but not major restructuring. Also your wikimarkup and use of infobox is good.

Okay now for some construction criticism:

  1. See the edits I have made to the first few sections [1]. Now I am not the best linguist by far, but I feel this rewording and condensation makes it much easier to read keeping the important details. If you agree, suggest working on all the other sections in similar fashion. Remember stay concise and precise, only add information that is important not just trivia (e.g. is a list of creatures/monsters important).
  2. Have not removed any, but consider removing the wikilinks to obvious info, especially if repeated - e.g. PC, classical etc... Wikilinks should be used sparingly for things that are not obvious (Dona Bailey} or are very important (links to dates or big concepts).
  3. Too many headings possibly - going down to the fourth heading for a relatively article e.g. 1.2.2.1, is a bit too much, consider having bigger sections, split into the relevant paragraphs.
  4. Finally if you are going to have an external link - make sure it actually links to it. If you can not find the manual then remove the section. Also check it is not a copy violation if you link to a game manual!

Right that is my first impressions. Give us a shout if something does not make sense, and if you want me to have another look or do something specific to the article I am here to help. Cheers Lethaniol 17:19, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Ah, you make me feel harsh with this [2] :):) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lethaniol (talkcontribs) 17:53, 23 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] The Answer is a Template Deletion

Someone mucked up while proposing the following for deletion Template:User browser - which left the message you saw. This has nothing to do with you, but to do with the template itself. I have removed the template - as it is not useful and we are not meant to use useboxes that all Wikipedians might use (e.g. This user is human). Suggest finding a userbox for this user browses with IE of Firefox. Hope that answers your question. Lethaniol 21:25, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article Review

Hi Tomas -

Okay this is a good start to an article - but at the moment it is only a stub. Most importantly you need to read up Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_crystal_ball. For a future book to be notable and worthy on Wikipedia - it needs an already notable author (see WP:NOTE) and well sourced third party sources documenting what this future book is about (see WP:V and WP:RS). I tell you this because someone might come along anI d WP:AFD if this future event is not well sourced.

So priorities

  1. Get it well sourced.
  2. Add correct stubs (see Wikipedia:Stub) and categories (see Wikipedia:Categorical index).
  3. Use a template from the following Wikipedia:Current_and_future_event_templates#Future_events at top of page.
  4. Have a look through the relevant Wikiprojects - they often have pre-determined infoboxes and structures that are well worth using (e.g. I have used the Novels wikiproject template for Catch-22) - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Books, Wikipedia:WikiProject Science Fiction and Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels.
  5. Sort the infobox using a standard template, recommend Novels template e.g. as used in Consider Phlebas.
  6. The structure is a bit more complicated as the book is not released - so standard templates are difficult to implement - but have a look at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - this famous series book is yet to be released but it has a well developed structure that you may consider pinching bits of.
  7. The links for In His Image and Acts of God do not actually go to an article that you mean them two. What I recommend is to not link at all (no point in having four articles on this trilogy - more likely to be deleted, harder to update - once the first book is released can have separate article).
  8. Reception section needs referencing
  9. I do not understand the reference section - these books are part of the trilogy yet to be written are they not.

And once all this is done, you will be in a good position to sit back and add the new information as it come in. Again I have been quite critical but hopefully the above points will help you develop this into an excellent article - ready for the books release. Any further questions on this or anything else I look forward to hearing. Cheers Lethaniol 15:14, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tomas - I am sorry about the confusion, though I think most of my advice stays the same. In terms of Infoboxes for trilogies, there is not any but I like what they have done with The Lord of the Rings which is a featured article. So when you make the articles for the three books in question you can use this style maybe. Also take care in linking to articles that do not yet exist e.g. not In His Image use In His Image (novel) or In His Image (book). Once the article is made you can disambiguate it from the main page see WP:DAB.
The only piece of advice that really needs changing from above is the structure - if you are going to create separate articles for each book, then the main trilogy article should cover the basics of plot (which you have done, though could be expanded) - details of plot belong in the individual book articles, and general reaction to the series (e.g. links to news stories) would be best on the trilogy page too. Basically anything that relates to all three books on trilogy page, anything specific about one book should go in the individual article. Hope that helps Cheers Lethaniol 14:37, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Block Log

Hi Tomas,

A Block log, is a list of all the blocks and unblocks you have ever had - e.g. here is yours [3] - you are good so have none :). You can find a link to it on the top line of your contributions page.

If you do not know what blocking is all about see Wikipedia:Blocking policy - only for bad people normally. Cheers Lethaniol 15:04, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Userboxes: Shortening Code

Afraid I can't be of much help - I've never used the 'big table method', rather took the code from an exsisting userbox and modified it (changing colors/image/text)...sorry I can't be of more assistance. - Aerobird Target locked - Fox One! 23:27, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

If you're referring to User:Aerobird/Userboxes Created - that allows me to have the ones I've created all in one place, and keeps the 'main' user page from getting cluttered. If you're referring to how the userboxes are arranged on my user page, the tables allow me to place them three-abreast which, when you have over 100 userboxes, shortens the page considerably. :-)
An example of formatting:

{| class="wikitable" border="0" cellpadding="2" |{{user Adult}} |{{User:Ginkgo100/Userboxes/User right-handed}} |{{User suburbs}} |- |{{User:Akrabbim/UBX/Emptybox}} |{{User:Aerobird/CSA Citizen Userbox}} |{{user German}} |}

...produces:
A This user is an adult.
This user is right-handed.
This user grew up in the suburbs.
This space for rent.
This user is a Confederate citizen.
This user is of German ancestry.
...and you can make the table as long or as short as you want by simply adding another break (the |-) and additional lines.
Hope this helps you out... - Aerobird Target locked - Fox One! 23:35, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Ah, now I understand. :-) That is necessary to allow transclusion of the userbox onto a userpage. For instance, if you put the userbox code {{User en}} on your page, the userbox is piped from the Wikipedia page Template:User en. To use one of the examples you mentioned, in order for someone to have the Wikiproject Birds userbox on their page, I need to have it at User:Aerobird/WP Birds Userbox so that they can put {{User:Aerobird/WP Birds Userbox}} on their page and have the userbox appear. - Aerobird Target locked - Fox One! 23:56, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image upload

All you have to do to upload an image is click "Upload file" in the toolbox (under the searchbox). For a screenshot, you have to add {{game-screenshot}} as the caption (the biggest box) while uploading. This ensures that a bot won't delete it a few days from now as unlicensed. Hope that helps! | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 14:31, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Add the template I gave you above (that's the one used for screenshots)
  • Add it to the box that says "Summary (author, source, URL, fair use rationale if applicable, extra If you are going to make tags you will have to type in {{tags}}., etc.):"
  • The only other things you have to do are 1. add the file name from your computer (C:\Documents and Settings\Jose y Valeria\My Documents\My Pictures\Tokxatron\Aztec Destruction.emf) to where it says "Source filename", and add the name you want for the picture (example: Aztec Destruction.emf) to where it says "Destination filename:".

Good luck, and leave me another message if you need more help. | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 15:27, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

No, {{subst:game-screenshot}} is the license you have to add. It's much simpler that way. :-) | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 15:44, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... did you type ".emf" after the source and destination names of the file? | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 15:56, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Not "emf.", but ".emf". If that doesn't work either, click browse, then go to my documents; then my pictures; Tokxatron, the folder; and finnaly the picture. By the way, has your "new messages" bar changed? Mine says "Your user talk page has been edited (last change)." now. | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 19:15, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Again eh? :-) Anyways, did the above instructions work? | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 19:26, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Could be. Or maybe someone hijacked Wikipedia. :-O | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 19:29, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

If .emf doesn't work, and neither does browsing for the picture, try ".wmf", ".jpg", and ".bmp". Then cross your fingers. | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 19:32, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... Did you change the file name, move it, or in any way alter it? Also, did you take it with the "Prt Scr" (Screenshot) button two places above "Delete", or with a program installed in your computer? | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 22:45, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Just got back, but I can only be here for about five minutes... Which image, the Ottoman homecity? | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 02:24, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Let's see... you said it was paint? Paint uses the file format ".png". That's probably why it was corrupted, because the file type was changed (I believe changing it back fixes it). | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 10:13, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Age of Empires III edit

Hi. A copyedit in this case is the removal of information that has no value to readers of the article who do not play the game. According to the Computer and Video Games Wikiproject, it is preferable not to include details that can be construed as 'gameguides' - ie. tips or pieces of trivia for actual players of the game. The other use of 'copyedit' in my edit summaries to AoE is in the sense of correcting grammar or spelling. ck lostsword|queta!|Suggestions? 22:44, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your uploaded image...

Hi TomasBat... I read your message to CKLostsword, and the answer is quite simple, really :)
All you need is to add a summary to the image. Say who took it (that would be you), why (to demonstrate home city on Age of Empires III article, perhaps), how (computer screenshot).. stuff like that...

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to reply on my talk page. Happy editing! Kareeser|Talk! 01:36, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

If you took the image from a website, then it may belong to that particular website. Also the image itself may belong to EA. Under fair-use, we are only allowed two low-quality images to use as images. We've pretty much exceeded that limit already, so there doesn't seem like much you can do... As a general rule, uploading images from other websites is tricky and frowned upon because it borders on it being illegal (ownership rights and the like)... Kareeser|Talk! 01:45, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Incidentally, please bear in mind that it is impossible for another user to upload a file that is on your computer: it is on a 'local' file (meaning that only you or other users of your computer can access it). Thanks. ck lostsword|queta!|Suggestions? 19:44, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hoax new message box

Yes, I mean the hoax new message box. When there's a lot of pressure answering serious messages, it's really annoying. It also trades off trust that these systems can be relied on for wiki communication and undermines ones reliability on them. Will you remove the hoax? Tyrenius 19:20, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

I have removed the hoax "new message" boxes from your talk and user pages. Please don't replace them. These boxes are for conducting wiki business and people rely on them for information. This undermines ones ability to rely on the proper ones. Your justification for keeping them is that you don't want to remove them because "it's fun". However, you admit "I know it can get annoying sometimes." There is no justification for keeping something for your own amusement, when you know it can annoy other editors. Your solution is "if you don´t like it, then never visit my userpage nor any of my subpages." This is undermining the purpose for which you are allowed to have a userpage and subpages, namely communication with other editors for building an encyclopedia. Tyrenius 19:17, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Check out WP:USER and what you can't have on your user page. This includes "Games, roleplaying sessions, and other things pertaining to "entertainment" rather than "writing an encyclopedia" ... if user page activity becomes disruptive to the community or gets in the way of the task of building an encyclopedia, it must be modified to prevent disruption." (my italics) Tyrenius 23:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

What Tyrenius failed to mention is that what he cited was a guideline, not a policy, and that there is no consensus about it. Until policy is clarified, you are allowed to have that on your page. Please see this discussion for details. Jeffpw 09:18, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm afraid you are gravely mistaken about guidelines, which certainly do need consensus, which in the case I cited is quite clear. All you've done so far today in your edits is argue to keep hoax message boxes. It might not be the most productive use of your time. Tyrenius 09:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Tyrenius, David certainly disrupted the Wikipedia today with his exercise in WP:POINT. I, for one, regret that so much of my time was wasted having to respond to administrators who either do not understand policy vs. guidelines, or choose to ignore the difference, as well as the lack of consensus surrounding it. Let's all hope that tomorrow will be a more productive editing day than today is turning out to be. :-) Jeffpw 09:47, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, can I legally keep it or not? Am I breaking a rule by having it, or am I just ignoring usefull suggestions? --TomasBat (@)(Sign) 13:58, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

My sense of the discussion is that at this moment you may have it on your page. If you thought it was policy, based on Tyrenius' message, you were misled (however inadvertently). However, we are in a fluid situation, and you should continue monitoring the Emergency Broadcast System for updates as they occur. Jeffpw 14:05, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I reject your suggestion that TomasBat was misled either deliberately or inadvertently. I gave him a link to the relevant page. He could, and no doubt did, read for himself exactly what was said there. As far as whether it can be kept or not, it depends who you speak to at the moment, as the whole thing is a furore. Jimbo is apparently going to implement a decision. Tyrenius 02:03, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No thanks for the smiley

Following a chain of links across user's talk pages and spamming them with random messages doesn't seem too useful. I can always check my mailbox or email for people sending me stuff I didn't ask for or do anything to get. It's called spam and junk mail—I guess we need a similar term for these now.

Have a nice day. —Doug Bell talk 21:35, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Age of Empires III Review

Hi Tomas - I would happy to do this review. This is already a well developed article so most of the criticisms will be quite minor in comparison to previous reviews, and I think this will have a good chance of getting FA status in the future.

As this review is for an article that has a number of contributors I will leave my comments and thoughts on the Talk:Age of Empires III so that all can use them, I hope that is okay. Cheers Lethaniol 15:30, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TEG article

Well ,first of all, thanks for letting me help on this article. Second, I'll also try to get some photos and maybe some information. Thanks, Slartibartfast1992 02:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry I haven´t been around that much lately and I haven´t really helped a lot on the TEG article (school just started). Ill try to be available. Slartibartfast1992 01:02, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Actually off topic, but I've been wanting to ask: Would you, by any chance, know of a school called Northlands?Slartibartfast1992 22:01, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I used to go to that school and I know somebody named Tomas Batalla from it. Is that you? Slartibartfast1992 23:27, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Soy Bruno Kaufman, el que se acaba de ir al Lincoln. Que coincidencia que nos encontramos! No sabia que tenias una cuenta de wikipedia! Slartibartfast1992 01:42, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Good work on the article; as I said though, there should be more details on the campaign, and more refs. Also, do you play on ESO? My name there is AndonicO as well; leave me an e-mail if you'd like to play sometime. · AndonicO Talk 19:59, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suggestion in the False New Messages

I noticed the box saying "You have new messages" when I added my name to your sig book. However, I also noticed that you put "Last Change" in capital letters. In the actual message, the words are "last change" instead. If you wish to ensnare more people with the box looking more authentic, you may want to fix that. Remember the problem you had? I'm having it too now. You said you fixed it using paint; my paint doesn't work, so I asked a friend to do it, but apparently it didn't work. What exactly did you do? Just save it? Thanks in advance! · AO Talk 11:47, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

I am so sorry. On another page, I had read someone's guidelines that said "No vulgar, sexual, messages etc." and so when I signed I said "Not a vulgar, etc. ~~~~". The fact is, before then I had copied the phrase "No I will not sign your page. :P ~~~~". After then, I copied the "vulgar etc." for my own autograph page (which I have not made yet), and accidentally copied the "vulgar, etc." into your page. I am quite sorry. (If anything I have said was unclear, please ask about it.) —  $PЯINGrαgђ  21:38, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your signature

I just thought you might find it valuable to know that, when I was reading the Jimbo Wales talk page, I found that your most recent signature was not legible on my screen. The yellow and greenish small letters are not clearly visible on the background. I'm not telling you that you have to change it, I just wanted to let you know that if you are trying to say something with those words, not everyone can see it. Thanks. [edit] Blocked User

Hi Tomas,

On this issue it would be useful if you could point out the user in question. I have been digging around but not found out anything yet - but I will continue. I vaguely remember that a user that only spends time using their account for social purposes may be blocked (i.e. not a ban - they can create a new account, but will need to concentrate more on editing wikipedia) - but I maybe wrong. Again please point me to the user in question and I will get back to you. Cheers Lethaniol 22:03, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Okay I have found the user - see [4] - only 2 edits out of 167 is not very good - and does give the suggestion that they are using their account only for socialising (I agree with User:Steel359 on this). Cheers Lethaniol 22:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Okay here is the guideline that the block is based upon - WP:NOT#Wikipedia_is_not_a_blog.2C_webspace_provider.2C_or_social_networking_site. I have to say I agree with this - server space should not be used for only socialising - ALL editors should be here to improve wikipedia in whatever way.
I suppose the next question is what to do about it. The user in question can always make another account, and get on with it. They can promise to get on with editing wikipedia and have their account unblocked. But above all the user in question will have to show a great willingness and priority to the improvement to Wikipedia if the wish to continue editing on it. Cheers Lethaniol 22:16, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Block

I know that my sister has been blocked,. Can other administrators than User:Steel359 unblock her? --Yummie 17:16, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, that would help a lot. She likes editing typos, but if she cannot edit anything but her talk page then what else can she do (except reasearch), you know? --Yummie 17:48, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

for informing me on adminship. --Yummie 17:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Did you help found infocentral? --Yummie 18:12, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Can you do this for me to see if it works on your computer? OK, follow these steps:
  1. Go to my user page.
  2. Click the link Articles!
  3. Does it work?

--Yummie 18:49, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I went to the edit count. It was a big help. --Yummie 18:51, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Wow, I got you! (ha ha!) --Yummie 18:57, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
