Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was always writing, and there were lots of books in the house. When he was eight, his family moved to Connecticut where he went through elementary school and high school.
He went to the University of Connecticut. First he tried music, which was too hard; then psychology, which had too may theories; then, finally, English. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in English.
