Too Hip For The Room
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Too Hip For The Room started as a folk-rock band created in 1998 by two brothers, Tony DeStefano - vocals and guitar and Paul DeStefano - Zendrum and percussion - in collaboration with Alan Fleishman, who was at one point their high school history teacher.
Bassist Alan left the band to retire in Florida and was later replaced by Eric Williams of The Dancing Hoods and Sparklehorse.
With the introduction of the electronic Zendrum to the group, replacing conga and bongos, they began to develop their unique sound, which is often compared to Barenaked Ladies and Wall of Voodoo.
According to their website they perform "eclectic originals and uniquely rearranged cover songs," such as a post-modern acoustic/electronic version of John Lennon's "Imagine".
They began to attain notoriety with regular contributions to The Radio Chick (Leslie Gold) Show, which was a staple of the WNEW-FM lineup during the late '90s.
In addition to performing unique covers of widely-recognized classic rock songs such as a bizarre simultaneous playing of The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away" and classic "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", they have also written and performed topical, humorous folk songs in the vein of Folk Revival mainstays such as the Chad Mitchell Trio.
Some of their more notable songs include "Warren Zevon's Gonna Die"-a tribute to singer and songwriter Warren Zevon-"Iron Gates" (Bulletproof Billy)-a parody dealing with Microsoft CEO Bill Gates-and a cover of the Blue Öyster Cult hit "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" sung with Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser."
