Trevor Denman

Trevor Denman is an announcer from South Africa specializing in thoroughbred horse racing. He is the current race caller at Santa Anita Park, Del Mar Racetrack and the Los Angeles County Fair (Fairplex) in southern California, and was the former announcer at Hollywood Park.

Denman, who began calling races in America in 1983 after announcing in his native country, is best known for the phrase "And awaaay they go..."

Some of the other popular phrases that Trevor has coined and are very popular with racing fans are, "scraping the paint" which is used to describe a horse who is saving ground. That horse is said to be so close to the rail, that he is literally scraping his body against the paint on the rail. Another phrase is "they would need to sprout WINGS to catch..." This one is used when a horse is winning by an insurmountable margin in the stretch. "looks like he jumped in at the quarter pole..." is used when a horse comes from far back and is running so fast as to give the impression that he just started to run.

He owns a three-year old filly in South Africa, named Top Twenty, trained by Paul Lafferty.

In the 1989 comedy movie 'Let It Ride' starring Richard Dreyfuss, Trevor is the track announcer that is heard in many of the racetrack scenes.

Denman will replace fellow caller Tom Durkin as the Breeders Cup announcer starting from 2006. ^[1]

Trevor was tapped to be the race calling voice of the 2006 Breeders' Cup, aired for the first time on ESPN instead of its original 'home' NBC Sports for the first 22 years. He replaced Tom Durkin who had been the race caller since the inception. The feedback after the day's racing was not entirely positive with some information called incorrectly. A renewal for making the calls with the 2007's Breeders' Cup is uncertain.

Trevor was the unnamed race announcer in the animated television show The Simpson's episode #239, aired originally Feb 2000: Saddlesore Galactica
