Uncle Charlie Interview
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uncle Charlie Interview is short, spoken word recording in the seminal 1970 album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In theme, the album and particularly this recording, reaches back to that form of Appalachian music that pretty much ceased as an indigenous form long about the death of Charlie Poole or shortly thereafter. With the emergence of modern country music, this kind of boisterous, nasal and downright charming music was relegated to providing incidental music for Hoot Gibson.
The Uncle Charlie of this album died a few years before the record came out, at the age of seventy-four. He left a tape wherein he coughs up a little history and sings and plays a couple of songs. His dog, Teddy, sings "Rugged Old Cross" and together they help set the tone for this album.

Uncle Charlie Interview
I was born in Kaufmann County Texas.
I says to him, that dog, you have no idea how smart he is, I just thought I'd tell you.
You ain't telling me nothing, I know all about it!
Kids would come here, "We want to hear old Ted sing"!
And in them days, I fooled with him more then, I could just commence this way.
I want you to sing now. Do, Do, Do, Wooh!
Now I'd take the harp and make a sound before Yo'd sing.
Teddy, come here !
Come here, Teddy !
