Union Street, Aberdeen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Union Street is the main street and shopping thoroughfare in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was built in the 19th century and nearly bankrupted the city when it was built.
The street is a mile long and a feat of extraordinary engineering skill involving the partial levelling of St Catherine's Hill and the building of arches to carry the street over Putachieside.
The Denburn Valley was crossed by Union Street by Union Bridge with a single span arch of 130 ft (40 m)- making it the largest single span granite bridge in the world.
The street is often closed off for the Saturday International Market and on Sundays in December in the run up to Christmas when it holds a fair and Christmas stalls.
[edit] Pedestrianisation
Union Street is soon to be pedestrianised from Union Terrace Gardens to Castle Street. The first phase of work in ongoing with streets that will take the brunt of the traffic diverted. Market Street and Bridge Street have been upgraded already, with Market Street's upgrade causing chaos and huge delays for traffic in the run up to Christmas.
