The department of Government at the University of Strathclyde is one of the leading political science departments in the United Kingdom. Formed in 1965 as the Department of Politics, it has been headed by a distinguished line of Professors: Allen Potter, John Mackintosh, Richard Rose, Jeremy Richardson, Brian W. Hogwood, Gerry Stoker, Mario Diani and James Mitchell. The current Head of Department is Professor David Judge. Since its inception in 1965, the Department of Government (formerly the Department of Politics) has grown to become one of the UK’s pre-eminent political science departments. The department currently has over 400 undergraduates from years 1 to 4. International research within the department has been widely recognised in successive Research Assessment Exercises (RAE). In the most recent RAE of 2001, the University maintained its 5 star rating, to add to the top ratings secured in 1989,1992 and 1996. It has thus consistently ranked among the top research departments in the UK. At the last national Teaching Quality Assessment in Scotland the Politics Division of the Department of Government achieved the only 'Excellent' grade to be awarded in Scotland.
