A new feature of MediaWiki 1.5 allows user groups to be created which include users at different levels.

Each group is assigned the following rights:

asksql	query the database using Structured Query Language
block	block an IP address, user name, or range of IPs, from editing
boardvote	check IPs and strike out votes during Board elections							list of users
bot	edit without their edits showing up in recent changes							list of users
checkuser	see all IP addresses used by a registered user or to show all edits from a given IP address (including those made by logged in users).							list of users
createaccount	create a new user account for themselves or another user
'Create article'	create a new article
delete	delete a page
deletedhistory	view the history of a deleted page
developer	Deprecated: no longer assigned							list of users
edit	edit any page which is not protected
editinterface	edit the MediaWiki namespace to affect the interface
import	import pages from a locally stored XML file							list of users
makebot	set bot flags for accounts
makesysop	give admin/bureaucrat abilities to another
move	change the title of a page by moving it
oversight	delete individual revisions of pages							list of users
patrol	state that they have checked an edit that appeared in recent changes
protect	lock or unlock a page, and edit locked pages
read	read pages (other than whitelisted pages if that option is on)
renameuser	change the name of an existing account
rollback	use a special link to more easily revert a bad edit.
siteadmin	change settings that affect the whole site
undelete	view deleted versions, undelete a previously deleted page, or undelete specific revisions of a deleted page
unwatchedpages	view a list of pages not on anyone's watchlist
upload	upload an image or other file, or overwrite an existing non-protected file
userrights	change the access levels of another user; more advanced than 'makesysop' (can revoke rights as well as promote)

Please note -

The rights of "all users" are fully accessible to everyone on the site (except banned users).
The rights of "registered users" are fully accessible to everyone who has held an account for more than four days.
The rights of "administrators" are fully accessible only to those with a sysop flag.
The rights of "bureaucrats" are fully accessible only to those with a bureaucrat flag.
The rights of "stewards" are fully accessible only to those with a steward flag.
Access to some permissions of being a "registered user" are not immediately granted, for fear of vandal accounts.
