Vavakkad(വാവക്കാട്) is a small village situated at the northern border of Ernakulam District, Kerala, South India.

It is 27 km from Ernakulam City and 23 km from Cochin International airport, Nedumbassery. It is 1.5 km away from National Highway No 17. The famous Cherai Beach is just 4km away from this place.

It was very famous for the coir business. Lots of Coir workers were earning their bread very comfortably before 90's. Now the business is on its last breath.It is well known for its cultural activities. People meet together every evening at the Gurudeva Memorial Library for participating in debates about public issues. It is the first village in Kerala which is ready to serve the senior citizens with a pension.
Gurudeva Memorial library (ഗുരുദേവ മെമ്മോറിയല് വായനശാല)is the candle light of knowledge to the village Vavakkad. The Library is founded on 1954 with Register Number 1492 and celebrated the golden jubilee in the year 2004.It has got the name after Gurudevan alias Sree Narayana Guru, who is considered as the father of modern Kerala

The place was filled with the bats ("Vaval" in Colloquel). After that it was named as "Vaval Kadu" (Forest of bats വാവല് കാട് --> വാവല്ക്കാട് --> വാവക്കാട് ). It became Vavakkad.

Vavakkad was the part of Thiruvithamkoor(Travancore) province before the union of the states. It was ruled by the Kings of Travancore.
