Victorian Amateur Football Association
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Victorian Amateur Football Association is an Australian rules football league in Victoria, Australia consisting purely of amateur players. Unlike the Victorian Football League and the VFL/AFL, the VAFA has always been strictly a purely amateur league.
The league is the largest amateur league in Australia and widely regarded as the best amateur Aussie Rules league in the world. The league consists of 7 senior divisions (with each club fielding a firsts and reserves team) and multiple Under 19 divisions.
The league's administration base is at Elsternwick Park, a former Victorian Football League stadium in suburban Elsternwick, Victoria with some small grandstands and capacity for around 15,000 spectators.
Crowds during home and away matches are modest in comparison to the professional leagues, however Grand Finals for each division often attract as many spectators as the Victorian Football League Grand Finals.
In addition there are also three Club XVIII divisions, primarily made up of either clubs only able to field one team, or clubs from higher divisions that can field a third team after their seniors and reverves.
Almost all of the clubs are private school based where by the 'old boys' from the school play (sometimes are coerced to play through employment/schollorship incentives). Suburban teams such as Oakleigh, Ormond and Hampton find it hard to compete agaisnt the private school teams.
The reigning premiers for the A Section are Old Haileybury.

[edit] 2007 Season
On March 15, 2007 the VAFA announced that the start of the 2007 season would be pushed back 2 weeks from the original starting date of April 14 to April 28. This decision was due to the water shortage facing Melbourne and the lack of suitable grounds to play games on. [1]
Some effects of the restructure involve moving the games scheduled for Rounds 1 and 2 to later in the season, the cancellation of the representative match against the Southern Football League and the reduction of the number of teams to make the finals in section D4 from five teams down to four.
