Category:Visitor attractions in Seoul
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The South Korean city of Seoul is home to many visitor attractions. Many are of historical importance, such as palaces and museums. Others showcase Korea's vibrant growth and rising place in the world.
Many of the sites, especially the historic ones can have intimidating names for foreigners, especially westerners. Many places on this list are 3 syllables long, each syllable comes from one Hanja character.
The syllable "gung" for example, means palace. So, the places ending in "gung" are palaces. "Cheon" means stream, such as "Cheongyecheon"
"Mun" means gate, and "daemun" means large (or great) gate. These are elaborate structures which served as important checkpoints on the edges of old Seoul. (Seonggyungwan is also known as "Namdaemun", the Great South Gate.)
"Dong" is equivalent to "neighborhood", and represents a particular section of the city.
