[edit] Schedule
The school year at Wakefield High School starts in late August and ends in early June. The class schedule, commonly referred to as "block scheduling", has students take four different classes each semester, each period being approximately ninety minutes long. This completes a course in one semester instead of one year and having 4 new classes in the second semester. Students take exams in mid January and again in early June.
[edit] Athletics at Wakefield
Wakefield's students compete in the NCHSAA 4A classification in the CAP 7 conference (through 2009). The men's basketball team has won the state 4A title twice (2004 & 2006)[1]. The football team had a prolific season in 2005, remaining undefeated until they reached the state semifinals.
[edit] The Marching Band Program
The Wakefield High School marching band has had great success in the past. This year's show theme is "I Believe..." It's about the many things we may or may not believe in, such as unicorns, dragons, ghosts, Santa, mermaids, leprachauns, and your imagination itself. The band traveled to the Bands of America competition in Maryland this year to compete against over 20 of the best bands in the region. They performed very well, achieving a Division 1 rating and a 7th place overall finish. They received first place in seven out of eight categories at a previous competition in Virginia, and finished 2nd overall, winning their class, at a competition in Cary in early November. In addition, the band hosted the fourth annual Heart of Carolina marching band invitational in early October. Fourteen bands, local and regional, attended the event.
