Wando High School

Wando High School is a high school in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Home of the Wando Warriors, the school was built anew in 2004. Located now on 1000 Warrior Way off Highway 17, with over 3,000 students, 33% are considered Gifted and Talented, while 93% of graduates attend two-four year college or universities. Wando offers over 250 classes, including Advance placement, Dual Credit, Honors, College Preparatory, and Applied Technology courses. The addition of a "Freshman Academy" improves the smooth transition of the change from middle school, to high school. After freshman year, the students are asked to pick one of four schools of study to major in. It now has an outstanding and award winning Mock Trial Team which raises the school to new standards.

Sited on 110 acres, this 433,121 square foot building shows noteable statistics. The grounds include a 4,800 square foot field house complete with a 1,598 square foot press box. Student parking spaces total 1,179, with 33 visitor spaces, 368 staff spaces and room for 20 buses. Inside the school, there is a 906 square foot performing arts center; the gym has over 2,560 square feet; and the specialized food court has 780 square feet. 2,780 tons of steel, 12,000 tons of concrete, over 800,000 bricks and concrete blocks and a total of 76 individual HVAC units were used in construction. The new Wando High School has two multi-purpose fields along with separate files for band practice, soccer, football, baseball and softball. There are also six tennis courts, a track area, and a shot putt and javelin area.

The Wando Marching band has won the SCBDA state 5A championship for 2 years in a row, 2005 and 2006. Also, in 2005 the band had a first place season, achieving first place in every competition that they went to.
In 2007, the Wando Band placed 42 people in the All-State Band.
The Wando Symphonic Band is notable for its consistent performance of grade VI music, which in South Carolina, is the music noted for highest difficulty. In spring of 2006, the Wando Concert band entered concert festival with grade VI music and achieved straight superiors; they were the first to achieve this in South Carolina as far as it is known.

Started From scratch by Maryln Austin, the Wando choirs have become the pride of the school. Currently there are 5 choirs, 2 of which count for honors credits. Currently the director is Vernon Huff.

Wando's school newspaper, viewable online at: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/sc/mtpleasant/whs/ has won many awards, including for the second consecutive year the Best in Show Award for newspapers over 17 pages at the National Scholastic Press Association Convention, the All-American Award from the NSPA for the sixth consecutive year, the Silver Crown Award for the second consecutive year from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and the Gold Medalist award from CSPA.It also placed in the top 35 newspapers in the nation. Also receiving the Best in State of South Carolina Award from the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for the sixth consecutive year, an All-Southern ranking, the SIPA’s highest ranking, for the 16th consecutive year, and Best in State from SCSPA for five of the last seven years.[1]
