Warhawk is an upcoming remake of the original Warhawk video game released on the Commodore 64[dubious — see talk page], and followed by a version on the PlayStation entertainment system. The game is a sci-fi third-person shooter mostly using aircraft, but also independent land-based combat in vehicles and on foot. The game takes place in a persistent, open-ended gamespace similar to a game like Grand Theft Auto.
The game takes advantage of the PlayStation 3 controller's motion sensing ability, allowing you to maneuver the aircraft while flying by moving the controller rather than pressing the buttons (predominantly). The controller's ability to recognize free movement allowing for six degrees of freedom (roll, pitch and yaw) plays into Warhawk's flying mechanics/physics. However, the developers have stated that a more traditional control scheme is optional.
The game will have many different playable vehicles, including ground units. It will allow a player in a flying craft to hover and hop out, then to either run around on the ground or commandeer battle tanks and possibly other vehicles, allowing the player to choose whether to fight the war in the air or on land when ever they want.
The game engine features procedurally-generated waves on the water, and volumetric clouds which are rendered in software.
The game engine also allows hundreds of computer programmed players to be on the screen at once, and the studio has confirmed online multiplaying of at least 32 people.
In 2006 at the Tokyo Game Show, Warhawk was officially given a release date of Summer 2007.
In a video hosted by IGN, the development team revealed that Warhawk will be an online-only game with support of up to 32 players. It will feature most common online play modes(like deathmatch), as well as at least one new mode. At GDC 2007, Phil Harrison did state that Warhawk would be a download-only game. However, this was later denied by Sony, stating that "It is a disc-based product", and that Harrison was merely stating the idea of full downloadable games.
