"What I Am" is a song written by Edie Brickell and Kenny Withrow and recorded by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians for their 1988 debut album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. It peaked at #31 in the United Kingdom, while reaching reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. This version was ranked #77 in VH1's 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders.
[edit] Tin Tin Out and Emma Bunton version
The song was covered by Tin Tin Out and Emma Bunton, and released as the second single from Tin Tin Out's album Eleven to Fly (1999) and the first single from Bunton's solo debut album A Girl Like Me (2001). It was released in the autumn of 1999 in the UK.
Tin Tin Out and Bunton's version debuted and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, losing the battle against former co-Spice Girl member Geri Halliwell's "Lift Me Up". It sold 106,000 copies to get to number two in its first week and around 215,000 copies altogether. "What I Am" was the eighty-eighth best seller of 1999.
Note that the B Side "Weird (Save Yourself)" is not an Emma Bunton vocal; its vocals are provided by Wendy Page.
