Wide Awake is the tenth song featured on Audioslave's third studio album, "Revelations". The song was written about the slow response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 by the United States government. When describing the song, guitarist Tom Morello said "It's a song of fingerpointing," whereas bassist Tim Commerford openly said, "It's a song about President Bush, and how much of an asshole he is," although the lyrics themselves remain in the plural and do not seem to specifically blame any one person.
When the band was first formed, singer Chris Cornell stated that he did not want Audioslave to become a political band, despite this being a large part of his bandmates' former group, Rage Against the Machine. However, political themes have slowly started appearing, as first seen in the music video for "Doesn't Remind Me".
This song, along with "Shape of Things to Come" was featured in the 2006 movie, "Miami Vice", which was based on the 1980s TV series of the same name.
The song was played in Toronto, Canada, August 28th, 2006, in a world premiere acoustic version.
