Muscle hypertrophy is a scientific term for the growth of muscle mass and cross-sectional area. Hypertrophy is caused by the muscles adapting to increases in workload that are too large the preexisting muscle capacity. With hypertrophy cardiac muscle becomes more effective at pumping blood and the skeletal muscles become more effective at transmitting forces through attachments of tendons to bones. [1]
