[edit] Structure of articles in general
[edit] Spoiler tags
If a section in an article is a potential spoiler, Big Brother Spoiler
should be inserted at the top of appropriate sections; giving this message to readers:
If the whole article could be considered a spoiler, article
can be used, and should be inserted at the top of the article. That will insert this message:
The word article
in article
can be changed to any other word or phrase that seems appropriate.
[edit] Navigational boxes
- All Big Brother articles should include Big Brother.
- All Big Brother UK articles should include Big Brother UK.
- All Big Brother Australia articles should include Big Brother AU.
- All Big Brother USA season articles should include Big Brother USA.
- All Pinoy Big Brother articles should include Pinoy Big Brother.
These templates should used at the bottom of an article, and should be updated accordingly.
[edit] Article talk pages
All talk pages of all articles that are in some way related to Big Brother should have the template Big Brother project inserted at the top. This will create a box at the top of the article, in line with the page name; that basically says that the page is part of this WikiProject and helps with article assessment.
[edit] Structure of Big Brother articles
Articles about a country's Big Brother series should use the official name of the series, or Big Brother (country)
if it isn't known.
[edit] Structure of series articles
A note: Articles for a series of Big Brother should not be created until there are promos on television. This, and only this, should be taken as a sign that Big Brother will be happening, and is good enough a reason to create an article. Anything else, unless it can be confirmed by some high up-there television executive guy, is not enough reason to create a series' article, and is most likely speculation. Another reason not to create an article so early is that there will most likely be no information in it. Lack of information, or information that's already in other articles, is pointless. Any articles about a Big Brother series that has not been confirmed should be nominated for deletion via WP:AFD.
[edit] Templates usage
[edit] Infobox
- Articles that are about a Big Brother series should include Big Brother housemates. This template creates a table where quick housemate information can be read. The table, when housemates' names are added, automatically creates links to each housemate's section; so the names of the sections should match the names used on the template.
- After a series has ended, the template should be replaced with Big Brother endgame; this can be done by changing the third word in the template from "housemates" to "endgame", so that the first line of the template reads "Big Brother endgame". At the moment, this template requires that sections are linked to manually.
All usage instructions are on individual template pages.
[edit] Formatting
[edit] Naming articles
- Articles about a Big Brother series are named
Big Brother (country series number)
; with exception to Big Brother America articles, which should be namedBig Brother (USA season number)
.
[edit] Formatting of Big Brother-sensitive words
- The word Day, when referring to a specific day by its number, should always be capitalised.
- Any Day numbers or eviction figures should be written in numeric form.
- On Big Brother Australia and Big Brother UK articles, the word House, when referring to a Big Brother House, should always be capitalised.
[edit] For Big Brother Australia articles
- Any references to the three-point twist should be written as
Three Point Twist
, and should be italicised at all times. Whenever it's seen to be appropriate, it should also link to Big Brother Australia#Nominations. - The word Intruder should always be written as a proper noun, and should be written as
Intruder(s)
orIntruder housemate(s)
. It should link to Big Brother Australia#Intruders whenever deemed appropriate. - The word Insider should be written as a proper noun, and should be written as
Insider(s)
orInsider housemate(s)
. - UpLate should be spelt like this, as a single word with the U and the L capitalised. It should always be italicised, and should almost always link to Big Brother Australia#UpLate.
- Any references to Network Ten should be written as
Network Ten
; notChannel 10
,The Ten Network
, orTen
.
[edit] For Big Brother America articles
- Head of Household, when written in abbreviated form, should be written as HoH, and be italicised when not used in a normal sentence.
- Power of Veto, when appropriate, should be linked to Power of Veto (Big Brother)
[edit] Section headings
This section includes the sections that should be included in a Big Brother series article if possible and necessary.
[edit] Housemates
Each series article should have a level two section named Housemates
or Houseguests
, and every housemate that did, or was meant to, participate in the game, should be listed afterwards in their own level three section.
Information to include in the section includes:
- Full name
- Any nicknames or aliases
- Date of birth, but not the person's age
- Where they're from. Sections in Big Brother Australia and Big Brother America articles should not use abbreviated state codes, but should instead use full state names. Where they're from should be written as
Suburb, State
; or when necessary,Suburb, State
. - The day they entered the house
- How and when they left
- Any birthdays the housemate had while in the House, including the real date, how old the housemate was on the day, the party theme, and any major events that occurred as a result of the birthday.
- Any major events that occurred in the house; that were due to, or involved, the said housemate.
Any information relating to housemates that hasn't or doesn't change because of their presence in the Big Brother House should be written in present tense.
[edit] Weekly summary and highlights
Weekly summary and highlights sections should be written in past tense. They should be short; not a detailed description of every event that occurred during the season. It is recommended that a Weekly summary section be split into one-week sections using level 3 or level 4 headings, with regular housemate evictions the last thing in each section. There is no agreement upon what should be included in a Chronology section, but the following seems to be acceptable:
- Who is up for eviction, before and after any twists, and what that twist is.
- Who is evicted; the day number; real date; and the percentage of votes, or merged votes, that they received.
- Tasks, but not too much information. How much of the budget is wagered on the task, what the task involved, any major events that occurred as a result of the task, and whether or not the housemates passed or failed the task is enough information.
- Birthdays: The person whose birthday it is, real date, how old they were on that birthday, the party theme, and any major events that occurred as a result of the birthday is enough information.
- Strikes and warnings.
[edit] For Big Brother Australia articles
- The theme of any Friday Night Live events, who won, who they took to the Rewards Room, which box they chose, and what was in each of the boxes.
- For Nominations: the eviction line-up before the Three Point Twist is used, who the Three Point Twist is used on, and the final eviction line-up.
[edit] For Big Brother America articles
- Who gets the Power of Veto.
- Who wins Head of Household.
[edit] Use of tables
The need for a large amount of tables has been eliminated with the integration of colours in the infobox, but the use of one or two as a way to clearly and easily provide information is not a bad thing.
[edit] Housemates summary table
A small table can be made that needs only have two rows, and if implemented effectively, can provide information easily. These tables should be put on the article in their own level two section, and should look something like this:
Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7 | Week 8 Day 57 |
Week 8 Day 59 |
Week 9 | Week 10 | Week 11 | Week 12 Day 83 |
Week 12 Day 85 |
Final Day 86 |

Catherine | Ryan | Paul | Bree |
Note 1: Bree was evicted on Day 63 (Week 9), and re-entered the house the next day after votes were deemed incorrectly calculated. Wesley, the housemate that should have originally been evicted, was evicted on the following Thursday.
A table will most likely need to be adapted to the article they are used for, but as long as it is not a full Nominations table, which should be included on a separate page, there should be minimal problems.
[edit] Nominations table and Voting history table
Nominations tables and Voting history tables, unless they are small enough to stay on the main article page, should be included on a separate page, as having them on a main article is not necessary; and will make it too large. These tables should be adapted to the country and series that they will be used for. Housemates should be listed in order of leaving, with the first housemate to leave at the bottom of the table.
Articles that have been created for the sole purpose of having a nomination history table in it should be named Big Brother (country series number) nominations table
; except for Big Brother America tables, which should be named Big Brother (USA season number) voting history
.
Examples of nominations tables and voting history tables for specific countries can be found at Big Brother (Australia series 6) nominations table, Big Brother nominations table (UK series 7), and Big Brother (USA season 7) voting history.
[edit] Image usage
No more than three fair use images should be used on any Big Brother article. Images from websites, especially random ones, should not be used. They will most likely be removed from an article and will be tagged as orphaned fair use images or deleted immediately. Users that repeatedly upload nonfree images that can not be used under fair use risk being blocked from editing Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Example requests for permission to see how you may ask a copyright holder to release their image (s) under a free license, which is useable on Wikipedia. While a TV network would never release such a photo (don't even try), a private person with a candid photo of a contestant (outside the show), may opt to.
[edit] Criticism
Any criticism should be in its own section, and every claim needs to be backed up with references from a reputable source.
[edit] Categories
- Big Brother Australia articles, and other articles relating to it, should be put in Category:Big Brother (Australian TV series).
- Big Brother America articles, and other articles relating to it, should be put in Category:Big Brother (US TV series).
- Big Brother UK articles, and other articles relating to it, should be put in Category:Big Brother (UK TV series).
- Pinoy Big Brother articles, and other articles relating to it, should be put in Category:Pinoy Big Brother.
[edit] Stub tag
Stubs should have a tv-prog-stub template at the bottom of the article.
[edit] Structure of Housemates' articles
Housemates should only have their own articles if they are notable for having done something outside the House before or after their involvement in Big Brother. They should not have their own article if their "notability" is their involvement in Big Brother. Information about their time in the Big Brother House, unless it was controversial or received media attention, should not be in such articles. Articles about former Big Brother housemates have been merged and redirected to relevant season articles or deleted in the past through WP:AFD because of non-notability outside of Big Brother. An incomplete list of Big Brother-related AfDs are here.
[edit] Categories
- Housemates' articles should be put in Category:Big Brother contestants. They should also be added to a category relevant to the country that the series of Big Brother they were in is produced in/for, see this section.
[edit] Sourcing
- Articles should be based on independent reliable sources. That means, an article should not merely recap a show, but should cover what's independently written about it. It should cite the sources it uses. This means, it should be possible for anybody to verify every statement in an article, without actually watching the program. If you see something on the show that's never been written about anywhere else, it probably doesn't warrant inclusion. Each person's recollection of a show, may be slightly different, so we need to use sources that anybody can review.
- When including information that is negative to the character of a contestant (or show producers), an extra high standard of sourcing is required. It is never acceptable to include such negative claims based on message board postings, blogs, personally watching the show (or internet feed), or other weak sources. Per Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, any such negative unsourced (or poorly sourced) claims can be removed immediately from any article.
- See Wikipedia:Footnotes for details on using footnotes to cite sources.
