Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports Car Racing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Category
The category Category:Sports Car Racing may be redundant to Category:Sports car racing. Should we adopt the 2nd one or should the 1st (with capitals and mentioned already on the project page) be kept and only filled with areas outlined on the page? James086Talk | Contribs 03:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Keep the 2nd one, my fault with accidentally creating the capitalized one. I meant for them to be the same thing. The359 03:24, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Other WikiProjects
I've noticed that other WPP's have sister and parent projects on the page. I think this would have the sister projects:
- WikiProject NASCAR
- WikiProject Formula One
- WikiProject World Rally
- WikiProject A1 Grand Prix
- WikiProject IROC
- WikiProject American Open Wheel Racing
Should there be a section linking to these? James086Talk | Contribs 04:32, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- I was going to add it and forgot. Added now. Also, feel free to add stuff to the project page if you want, it's open to everyone to add to as they see fit. The359 04:48, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Project Logo
I've uploaded these two cropped images as candidates to be used in creating a logo for the project, as well as being used in user boxes and project templates.
-or-
If better photos can be uploaded in the future, we can change the logo then. Please vote for which of the two you prefer for now. The359 05:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- GT-One because it has more than one car in the shot also when shrunk I think it would be better (it's taller than it is wide) on a template. James086Talk | Contribs 06:02, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Actually amazingly the GT-One picture is perfectly square, although I too think it looks taller then wide. The359 06:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- 905 - There's too much in a small image in the GT-One shot. If it gets shrunk anymore, it will be impossible to tell what's in it. Because of the framing and stretched-out field, most of the frame ends up being blank asphalt. The 905 photo clearly shows a prototype sports car in action, giving a good semi-three-quarter angle so we can see the side and rear, as opposed to just the front and headlights. FCYTravis 06:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- I've added shrunken versions of each picture at 70 pixels wide for a comparison of how well they can be read. The359 06:34, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- 905 All the other racing related WikiProjects use a single car. I think that's the best way to show what your focus is, and I don't think our focus should appear spread out and blury. Mustang6172 06:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject Motorsport
This topic has been brought up on WikiProject Formula One. The proposal is to have a WikiProject Motorsport as an umbrella for all the motorsports related projects, including this one, but mostly concentrating on articles which span all forms of motorsport, like technology and terminology. This will also help bring uniformity across projects. Feel free to voice your opinion on the matter. Also state if you are for or against the project. The359 04:01, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Racers that are known for non-racing professions
I have added James Dean, Steve McQueen, Shane Lynch of Boyzone and Paul Newman into this wikiproject as they all have been involved in sportscar racing in real life, feel free to make discussion in regard to this. Willirennen 17:50, 18 December 2006
[edit] Template:Mazda sportscar racers
The most trickiest thing I am working on is this template for Mazda's sportscar racers whether its for IMSA, Le Mans or Gr C , the reason is although I have this Mazda book, it dosen't explain who is the works and privateer team, or it mentions which drivers who did not drive for Mazdaspeed drive for factory teams. So feel free to make edits. Also I don't know if this is an eyesore for many, I would prefer to keep the color as it reflects on the 1991 winning car. Willirennen 18:35, 18 December 2006
- I would tone down the green a little bit. Also, I kind of liked it better when it was smaller and only contained the IMSA and Group C cars. Maybe create a seperate chart for GTO/GTU cars? Kudzu might also be a problem since they ran cars with engines besides Mazda, including Buick, so I think it'd be better to have a single Kudzu template then to have just a Kudzu-Mazda template. The359 20:07, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- There is two bits I find tricky, the use of Web colors to make it look like the 1991 winner's race color, I have been experimenting a few shades of green include lyme which is rather too bright so I had to revert to the current color. The other tricky part is many of these Mazda campaigners used Lola, March and Tiga chassis as well and determing who was really employed as works driver, I have not deleted, but placed it out of view. I am planing to start on the Jim Downing and Kudzu page soon if time becomes available. Willirennen 01:20, 19 December 2006 (utc)
[edit] Naming Conventions
I'd appreciate it if all involved in WP:SCR would take a glance at Talk:Rolex 24 at Daytona in regards to the discussion about the naming of the article, whether it should be the currently used Rolex 24 at Daytona or the commonly used 24 Hours of Daytona. This decision will affect the naming of other races on Wikipedia, especially within our WikiProject. The359 07:56, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Racing car template
The359 asked me to comment here on {{racing car}}, which I created when I was last working on the Brabham BT46 article, but with the intention that it should be applicable to all racing cars (you may have seen notes from me to that effect on talk pages for various cars). Having had a look at it again (see template:Racing car) I think it holds up pretty well, although perhaps it should also cover body type (i.e. open, closed, GT or prototype). What do others think? This template would, I think, be a good candidate for WP:MOTOR. 4u1e 13:44, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:30, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WP:SCR Featured Articles
I would like to hear some suggestions from others about what articles within the project they feel should be developed into Featured Article status? My first suggestion would be the 1955 Le Mans disaster. The359 21:46, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- That is a very important article for this WPP so yes the 1955 Le Mans disaster. I have been working on Maserati MC12 (which is supported by this project) and I think it's getting close to FA, not that it's important for the project, but it wouldn't take too much effort to get it there. Other articles I think are important for the project are: 24 Hours of Le Mans, naturally Sports car racing, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), IMSA and perhaps some of the more famous manufacturers/teams such as Porsche, Ferrari and Audi. James086Talk | Contribs 03:49, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Mercedes-Benz motorsport
I've just made this article, Mercedes-Benz motorsport about all of M-B's motorsport activities. It's not all about sportscars, should it be added to the project? Feel free to help out expanding it. Spute 23:41, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Championship/series infobox template
Those of you who are not also involved in WP:MOTOR may have missed our discussion about a standard infobox for national and international race series. To that end, I developed Template:Infobox motorsport championship, which we have begun to use on articles that are not covered by other projects. I'd like to get some feedback from you about its suitability for articles that come under the remit of your particular project; is there anything that you would like to see changed or added to make it suitable for your articles? Adrian M. H. 13:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Rather than try to adapt the existing template to sports car racing, I have begun to create Template:Infobox Sportscar championship. I would appreciate some feedback about it, particularly with regard to how we can best describe the championship classes, and how to make the drivers' champions correspond to those classes. If there are any other fields that should be included, let me know. Regards, Adrian M. H. 13:54, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Porsche Junioren
This article currently contains multiple redirects that should go to their own seperate articles, especially since all the drivers listed in the article are high profile drivers in nearly every sportscar series that is running at the moment. I'd appreciate it if seperate articles could be written for all these drivers. A full list is on the To-Do List. The359 03:17, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Race report infobox
Hi y'all. Just thought I'd let you know that there is a fairly generic race report infobox template available at Template:Generic race report infobox (yeah, not the most original of titles...). I have deliberately tried to keep it as non-series specific as possible so that it can be used for a wide range of different race categories. The cut-and-paste pro forma of its talk page shows an old, non-Championship F1 race. To use it simply cut, paste, and replace with the relevant information. Hope this is of some use. Pyrope 19:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hopefully once the individual race results start gaining more reviews these templates can be put in. As it stands now, with the results charts and this template, there'd be a horrible clash to fit the page space. The359 23:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] a new more visible todo list
I have created a new and more visible version of the to-do list, purely for it to be accessible, so feel free to make edits from there Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports Car Racing/to do. Willirennen 15:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] A reminder about WP:Motorsport
I thought it would be a good idea to post a reminder about our parent WP; WikiProject Motorsport. We currently have only two editors listed on the List of Members, but I'm sure that there are more of you out there! Those of you who haven't already contributed to it are more than welcome to do so, particularly if you have specialised knowledge of any racing discipline that doesn't have a dedicated WP. If enough editors get together and coordinate their efforts, we can make a big difference to the neglected areas of Wikpedia's motor racing content. Regards, Adrian M. H. 20:20, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Photos
After a trip to the 24 Hours of Daytona, I've been uploaded photographs of racing cars to help expand some of our articles. If anyone has photographs, especially of historic vehicles, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could add them to the project. The359 21:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Featured Content
A suggestion: In the Featured Content section we could have current Featured article candidates, Good article candidates and Peer review requests related to the project. This way it would help draw the attention of people who know more than average about the subject to comment on the articles, hopefully picking up more specific errors/omissions etc than other editors would. The thing that gave me the idea was the equivalent section at Wikiproject Automobiles. Any objections, comments? James086Talk 08:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Works for me. The359 17:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] FIA or CSI in the 1960s and 1970s
When we write articles about sports car racing in the 1960s and 1970s, should talk about the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile or the Commission Sportive Internationale in those articles? --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 08:43, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'd say go for the period correct organisation. The359 13:43, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I've started a new page for Group 4 (racing) and have used mainly FIA for now. It gets a bit messy when all the references say FIA, even though it might have been CSI at the time. However, there is a more pressing concern - that is to sort out the mess between Group 4 (racing) and Group 5 (racing). See next section. --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 10:07, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- The CSI was a subsidiary body of the FIA (formed 1947-ish), so both are correct for the period, but it is more likely the CSI that was making the decisions. The two you don't want to mix up are CSI (pre 1978) and FISA (post 1978), which were exact equivalents. In some cases (where it distracts from the point at hand) I've used FIA throughout and footnoted it to explain the intricacies. 4u1e, 8 March 2007, 14:55
-
- I like the idea of using a footnote, rather than cluttering up the article explaining the relationship between CSI (or FISA) and FIA. Do you have any example of the text you used? Or article you've used this - then people like me that are too lazy to think of their own wording can copy yours. :-) --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 10:34, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Group 4 (racing) and Group 5 (racing)
From my references, it seems that Sports Cars was originally a Group 4 (racing) class, this being the case from at least 1966 until 1969 and cars like the Ford GT40 and Porsche 917 were homologated into Group 4.
We know this from the FIA List of Previously Homologated Cars, that can be found at the FIA Historic Racing Regulations page, showing homologation of the Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512 into Group 4. Then some time around 1970(?), the Group 4 sports cars (production run of 25) were moved to Group 5 and the Group 4 becase "special grand touring cars (production 500)". So this means the Group 5 (racing) page needs some tidy up as there would appear to be three phases of Group 5 cars.
- Phase 1: Group 5 Special touring cars (1966 or 1968?)[1]
- Phase 2: Group 5 Sports cars - ex Group 4 - production run of 25 (1970 ish?)
- Phase 3: Group 5 Silhouette GT cars - starting about 1972.
Does anyone have some better and more exact dates (and references) for these, so we can update the Group 5 page? --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 10:07, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- It seems a bit more complicated than I thought - looking at the various FIA appendix J from 69, 71, 75 and 76 (and other references), there seem to be at least 4 phases of Group 5 racing and it seems to go a bit like this (please correct me if I'm wrong):
-
- 1966-1969: Group 5 Special touring cars
- 1970-1971: Group 5 Sports cars - ex Group 4 - production run of 25
- 1972-1975: Group 5 Sports cars (up to 3.0L) - seems to include sports and prototypes????
- 1976-1982: Group 5 special production cars (Silhouette GT cars)
- Can anyone suggest some other (non FIA site) references for this one? --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 11:56, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Club Racing
Shouldn't this project include club racing, like SCCA, PBOC, etc? It's not professional or televised or anything, but it IS sports car racing. The series list only seems to contain professional racing series. JDS2005 16:08, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- They can be covered, but there's just not a lot that can be written on them that there is on professional series. The list of covered series at the top isn't complete, people can add what they feel should be covered. The359 18:37, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- Some of this is covered on the SCCA page, and while we could add these series (and club racing series in other countries), we have to be careful to fulfil the requirements of notability and avoid any sort of soapbox or self-promotion type of articles. If the subject meets the criterion of "a topic is notable if it has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, reliable published works, whose sources are independent of the subject itself", then it should be worth covering in Wikipedia. --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 09:02, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Changes in Templates
Hi, I'm currently making some changes over on the WikiProject Motorsport Assessment Page. Look in the statistics section. Only 240 articles have the template WikiProject Motorsport on it. I'm thererfore going to propose something (I think this has been discussed a while back). Can every single Motorsport article have the template on it's talk page. My reasoning for this is that some drivers have only the Formula One template on the article. However, surely (by the way, this goes for virtually all articles), they haven't got to Formula One someway. They haven't just been thrown into F1, I don't think any drivers done that. They've gone through other forms of Motorsport. Therefore, surely the Wikipedia Motorsport template is needed for every single Motorsport article?. I'm going to do a vote on this (on this page, plus the Motorsport project and all the child projects) so we can get a decision on this. By the way, don't bother voting on different projects, as only one of your votes will count! Davnel03 16:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

New discusssion on Motorsport talk page. Davnel03 18:05, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Does this mean you are going to restore the votes and comments that have been removed from here, and move them to the other page? --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 21:15, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Clay Regazzoni
I'm trying to finish off the Clay Regazzoni article for a stab at GA, but can't find much in the way of references for his sports car appearances in the early 1970s. Can anyone either reference the relevant section or the article or advise on where I can find suitable online sources? Cheers. 4u1e 8 March 2007, 14:58
[edit] Question of copyright
I had been looking at the Ferrari 512 page and noticed what appears to be copyright infringement. In fact, I feel that most of the page needs to be removed or rewritten, I'd appreciate if people could take a look at the page, comment on the talk page and possibly help with the rewrite. --Xagent86 (Talk | contribs) 10:44, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 19xx in motor racing categories
I've recently created Category:1950 in motor racing - Category:1968 in motor racing. So, feel free to add any relevant articles or subcategories into these new categories. -- DH85868993 12:23, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] IMSA
After covering pretty much every major international sports car series, I believe the time has finally come to properly go over the IMSA series. However I believe there is one major hurdle to overcome before we can actually cover it. What do we name it? The series had many names of the years, mainly due to sponsors, but what is the most common name for the series? Looking over results, here's a breakdown of the names:
- 1971: IMSA GT Series
- 1972-1978: Camel GT/Camel GT Challenge
- 1979: Winston GT
- 1980: IMSA GT Series
- 1981-1993: Camel GT Championship
- 1994-1997: Exxon World Sportscar Championship
- 1998: Professional SportsCar Racing Championship
Should we go with IMSA GT? Camel GT? Something else? Suggestions welcome. The359 21:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also, once this is established, everything regarding the series should be moved from International Motor Sports Association to the new series page, and IMSA should remain merely about the governing body, especially since it governs a multitude of series (GT, IMSA Supercar, IMSA Lights, GT3 Cup) The359 21:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
