Yan Yean Reservoir
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yan Yean Reservoir is the oldest water supply for the city of Melbourne, Australia. It is built on the Plenty River a tributary of the Yarra River, 30 kms north of the city. A 9 metre embankment contains 29 million cubic metres of water. At the time of its construction in 1870 it was the largest artificial reservoir in the world.[citation needed]
It was designed by James Blackburn, a former London sanitary inspector and, later, a transported convict.
