Zachary Zatara is a fictional character in the DC Universe.
Zachary is a descendant of the Homo Magi just like his cousin Zatanna and uncle John Zatara. He first appeared in Teen Titans (vol. 3) # 34, and was created by Geoff Johns and Tony Daniel.
[edit] Fictional character biography
After the events of Day of Vengeance, when magic in the DC Universe is changed, Zachary develops abilities similar to his relatives, Zatanna Zatara and John Zatara. Calling himself the most popular teenaged magician, he briefly joins the Teen Titans. Zachary shows very little tact or patience and is not at all modest when it comes to his skills. Instead, he often boasts and displays a calm, egotistical attitude. As a result, he was left with few to no friends amongst the Titans, many of whom looking at him as a spoiled, selfish brat.
During the initial "auditions" for the Teen Titans, Zachary met with Kid Devil (Eddie Bloomberg), with whom he would share a very shakey friendship with. One night after performing as a stage magician in Metropolis, Zachary is approached by Eddie, who askes him about a mysterious candle he found. Zachary explains that Eddie's candle is magical in nature and they light it. Suddenly, they are transported to Neron's realm and meet the demon himself. After advising Eddie not to listen to Neron, Zachary watches helplessly as Eddie makes a deal with the demon. Eddie is happily transformed into a real teenaged demon, with Neron making one condition; should Eddie stop trusting his idol, Blue Devil, by his 20th birthday, Eddie's soul will belong to Neron. Neron then sends both the "new" Kid Devil and Zaachary back to Earth. Zachary reluctantly keeps Eddie's secret.
Zachary then helped Kid Devil gain entrance into the Teen Titans, and together they have multiple adventures. They battle Kid Crusader and, during one stint, went to New Azarath, where they were almost eaten by the Phantasm. Zachary would remain a member of the Titans for several months, before eventually left because one of his female teammates was "driving [him] crazy". Said teammate is believed to be Raven, whom he appears to have developed a crush on, and even keeps a secret photo of.
One Year Later, he is performing as a professional stage magician in Japan with an assistant called "Bunny," who he treats with various amounts of kindness. The Teen Titans come speak with him, as they are looking for Raven. At this point, Zachary wants nothing to do with the Titans and does not remember his times with Eddie fondly. Still, he does states that Raven come to him in Japan and began to ask him "weird questions...about [herself]".[1]
[edit] Powers and abilities
As with the other members of the Zatara family, Zachary can use his magic to affect inanimate objects, by saying almost any desired effect backwards. For example, in Teen Titans issue 39, he simply says "Azzip" to summon warm pizza into his hands.
However, as he explains, he cannot affect people with these powers (unlike Zatanna). Though he has been shown to affect doves with ease in one performance, the exact limit between small animals and humans is unclear.
