Face Value (1981) |
Hello, I Must Be Going! (1982) |
Face Value is the title of Phil Collins' debut solo album, released in February of 1981. The album includes one of Collins' greatest hits "In the Air Tonight".
Like the following album, Hello, I Must Be Going!, most of the songs on Face Value are based on the pain and anger Collins felt while he was going through his divorce.
Other singles didn't have the same chart success as "In the Air Tonight", they were: "I Missed Again", which reached No. 14 in the UK and No. 19 in the USA. Also "If Leaving Me Is Easy" was released as a single, reaching No. 17 in the UK, but was never released as a single in the USA.
[edit] Miscellanea
- This is the only album that has Collins' face in just black and white.
- This is the only Phil Collins album to have a hidden track on it.
- This is the album with the most covers on it (2), Cover versions on Face Value are: "Behind the Lines" and "Tomorrow Never Knows", not including the brief hidden track of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The remake of "Behind the Lines" came to pass during the sessions for the Genesis album Duke as the band played the song back at a fast speed and the track resembled a disco number and Phil recorded it as a disco-ish song complete with the Earth, Wind and Fire horn section.
- This is the only time that Phil Collins ever has a theme of 1970s music in his songs including Behind the Lines, I Missed Again, and I'm Not Moving
Face Value is also the name of a Phil Collins and Genesis tribute band in the UK.
[edit] Hidden Track info
At the end of the song Tomorrow Never Knows which is the last track of the album, if one turns up the volume to a mid-high level, Collins can be heard singing "Over the Rainbow" with an echo. The hidden secret starts at 4:14 and ends at 4:43 then says OK and the track ends at 4:50. (Collins has stated in interviews that he used this song to warm up his voice - and added the recording to the end as a sort of inside joke.)
