Fendall Winston Yerxa

Maj. Fendall Winston Yerxa, Sr. (1913)
Fendall was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Dwight Keyes Yerxa, Sr. (1881-1967) and Leila Griffin Winston (1885-1962). He was raised in Minneapolis, and attended Hamilton College. The six foot four inch tall Fendall began working at the now defunct Minneapolis Journal in 1938. During World War II, Fendall led a machine gun platoon in the Pacific for two and one-half years and was much decorated. He is a retired Marine Major. After the War he began work as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. He was raised to City Editor in 1952. In 1955, he left the Tribune to become the Executive Director of the Wilmington Morning News and Journal-Every Evening, both owned by Christiana Securities Co., a DuPont Holding Company. In 1960, Fendall returned to the New York Herald Tribune, this time as the Executive Vice President-Managing Editor. In July of 1961, he left the Tribune again, to become Editorial Director and Anchor Man for ABC News Editor’s Choice, which aired on Sunday nights. He later taught at the University of Washington, and lived in Seattle, Washington.
