In June 2006, the Peruvian government agreed that Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA), the concessionaire operating Peru’s railways, should go ahead with converting the 914mm gauge Huancayo - Huancavelica line to 1435mm. Estimated to take 16 months, the $US33m project will be funded jointly by the government and the Andean Development Corporation. FCCA, operated by the Railroad Development Corporation (RDC) of Pittsburgh, USA, which has suggested the building of a 21km, $400million tunnel in the Andes, to reduce the spectacular 332km Lima-Huancayo journey to 4 hours. The tracks start at Callao port city and go through Lima in a path parallel to that of the Rímac River. It crosses into Junín state via the Galera Tunnel, the highest railroad tunnel in the world. It reaches La Oroya, where it splits in two: the southern branch goes into Huancavelica, stopping at Huancavelica city, while the northern branch goes into Pasco state, passes through Cerro de Pasco (the state capital) and ends at the Goyllarisquizga coal mines.
