FIA European Championships for Rallycross Drivers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The FIA European Championships for Rallycross Drivers is a Rallycross competition series whos forerunner (the Embassy/ERA European Rallycross Championship) was established in 1973. For 1976 the FIA adopted the motorsport of Rallycross and awarded the first official European title. For 1978 two classes became introduced, one class for Touring cars and one for Grand Touring cars, but the title was for the driver with the highest amount of scored points from both Divisions, Norwegian Martin Schanche. For 1982 the FIA established new rules; the Division 1 cars (Group A) were restricted to two wheel drive and the Division 2 cars (Group 5) were allowed to use four wheel drive. The first European Rallycross Championship winners under this new rules became Norwegian Egil Stenshagen and Austrian Franz Wurz (the father of current Formula One driver Alexander Wurz).

[edit] The Group B years
After some major accidents in Rallying by the end of 1986 the controversial Group B cars were banned from the WRC and subsequently entered the European Rallycross Championship in 1987. The Division 1 class had two wheel drive cars; such as Volvo 240 Turbo, Saab 900 Turbo, VW Golf GTI 16V and Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth. The Division 2 class hosted Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, Ford RS200 E2, ARG MG Metro 6R4, Lancia Delta S4 and Audi Sport quattro S1 – but with even more horsepower (650 to 700bhp) output than in its short Rallying (up to 500bhp) career.

After 1992 the Group B cars disappeared and the 4-wheel drive cars came in to the era. The Division 1 class consisted of the Group N standard production cars and the Division 2 class consisted of the Group A cars such as Ford RS 2000, Citroën ZX, Citroën BX, Peugeot 309. In 1994 two new cars came on to the scene the Citroën Xantia and the Peugeot 306 S16.
