[edit] Stupid category
This is a stupid category. Fictional Americans and DC Comics characters as separate categories more than covers this. Do the math. If we form categories that combine every other possible combination of categories, there would be more categories than articles in Wikipedia. Doczilla 06:20, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- It's a lot less stupid than having several hundred entries in the "Fictional American comics characters" and "Fictional Americans" categories, which was the situation when I created this (and the Marvel Comics equivalent) months ago. At that time I looked at the guidelines for creating subcats and this was the logical step. CovenantD 15:39, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- It's also less stupid that having the redundant DC Comics characters in every article, since that has sub-sub cats that cover most heroes and villains already. CovenantD 15:42, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- I notice you're now simply removing articles from this category, Doc. Not exactly a very...noble move on your part. While you may not like a category, you can't empty it without just cause. ACS (Wikipedian); Talk to the Ace. See what I've edited. 16:25, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
Not flatly emptying. Cleaning up. Regardless of which, I backed off on that while we discuss it at Wikiprojects Comics. Doczilla 20:59, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Cautionary note
A big issue for people who actually like this category is that people are overpopulating it. They're too readily assuming characters are American. Think how many Canadian actors play American roles. Off the top of your head, do you know exactly which "Saturday Night Live" cast members have been American and which were/are Canadian? Is Horatio Sanz a citizen of the U.S. or Mexico? Unless American birth and/or citizenship has been clearly identified, a character does not belong in this category. It's presumptuous. Doczilla 20:59, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed that when I created this subcat back in April, but being a relatively new editor at that time felt I didn't have enough knowledge of each character to make that call when I recategorized articles from "Fictional Americans" and "Fictional American comics characters." Believe it or not, I did remove a lot of obvious errors back then. CovenantD 23:29, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
