Fire horn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fire horn is a device used to call volunteer firefighters to active duty in case of need. The horn is usually located atop a fire station or town hall, and is designed to project volume sufficient to reach the town limits. Fire horns utilize codes comprised of bursts grouped in sets of one, two, three, etc. These codes are specific to each town and refer to local streets, informing firefighters as to the location of the fire.
Some communities have retired fire horns as outfitting individual volunteers with pagers or radios has become technologically and economically feasible. However, many horns have been maintained as a redundancy and out of tradition. [1]
