Fourstardave Handicap
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fourstardave Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Saratoga Race Course each year. The Grade II race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf. It offers a purse of $150,000.
The Fourstardave is named for the horse once called "The Sultan of Saratoga" because he'd won at least one race at the Saratoga track each year from 1987 to 1994. He died of a heart attack October 2002 at the age of 17 and is buried with exceptionally rare honor in Claire Court at Saratoga Race Course. Only three horses are buried there.
Fourstardave had 100 starts and a record of 21-18-16 with earnings of $1,636,520. At Saratoga the beloved fan favorite set a course record of 1:38 4/5 for a mile and a sixteenth. Upon his retirement, he was feted at neighboring Siro's Restaurant, where he was presented with an edible key to the city and had the small lane named in his honor (Fourstardave Way).
Before 1996, the Fourstardave was run as the Daryl's Joy.
Da Hoss, now living in style at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington won this in 1996.
In 1990 and 1991, Fourstardave won it when it was still the Daryl's Joy.
