In 1802 he was elected to the House of Commons for Elgin Burghs, a seat he held until 1806, and then represented Inverness Burghs from 1806 to 1807, Elginshire from 1807 to 1832 and Elginshire and Nairnshire from 1832 to 1840. After his first wife's death in 1840 he married secondly Louisa Emma, daughter of Robert George Maunsell, in 1843. He died in July 1853, aged 75, and was succeeded by his son from his first marriage, John Charles Ogilvy-Grant.
