Free People's Movement

The Free People's Movement (FPM) or Movimiento de la Gente Libre (MGL), is an international Marxist organization with local branches in several locations around the world. The FPM advocates revolutionary Marxism and asserts that capitalism can only be overthrown by the exploited masses, under the leadership of the working class, through socialist revolution.^[1] The organization has branches in New York, Connecticut, Maryland/Washington DC, Ohio, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, the United Kingdom, Luzon, Philippines, Dominican Republic, Tamil Nadu, India, Andhra Pradesh, India, West Bengal, India, Solomon Islands, Lagos State, Nigeria, Uganda, Alberta, Canada, as well as members in Pakistan and other areas.

The FPM differs from most communist parties in that its ideology is not based on a particular doctrine or "ism" (for example, Maoism or Leninism), but rather on the theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and the lessons acquired over the history of the working class movement.^[2] The theoretical contributions of Che Guevara are also especially influential on the group. The Free People's Movement claims a unique structure apart from other communist parties, which are organized on the basis of democratic centralism.^[3]

Two newspapers, "The Free Press" and "¡Ya Basta!", and a political journal "Liberation" are published by the FPM, as well as many books, pamphlets, and leaflets. Some branches also put out their own publications, as is the case with "Dominicano Libre", the occasional political journal of the Dominican Republic Branch.

The FPM has an affiliated youth group, the Revolutionary Youth, for members who aren't yet ready or able to fully commit themselves to the organization. Both the Free People's Movement and Revolutionary Youth were affiliate organizations of the International Working People's Association before breaking relations with another affiliate, the Communist League (US).^[4]
