Friona, Texas

Friona is a city in Parmer County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,854 at the 2000 census.

Baker Eldon "Red Dog" Duggins (1925-2007) was an educator, coach, junior high school principal, and high school counselor for the Friona Independent School District from 1955 until his retirement in 1985. A native of Cordell, Oklahoma, Duggins was a World War II Marine, having won the Purple Heart. In 1953, he married the former Margaret Cox, and they moved to Friona two years later.
Duggins was active in the community, particularly in the Friona United Methodist Church. He was a past president of the Friona Noon Lions Club and a board member of the Panhandle Mental Health Mental Retardation agency. He was named Friona's "Man of the Year" in 1964, when his high school girls basketball team won the state championship with a 35-0 record.
He died two days before his 82nd birthday and is interred in Friona Cemetery.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,854 people, 1,271 households, and 983 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,078.3/km² (2,794.8/mi²). There were 1,399 housing units at an average density of 391.4/km² (1,014.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 61.47% White, 1.30% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 33.81% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.86% of the population.
There were 1,271 households out of which 44.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.48.
In the city the population was spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,964, and the median income for a family was $36,863. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $19,299 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,635. About 14.1% of families and 15.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.5% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.

Name means "Cold One" (from Spanish word for cold, Frio)
