Frontier Field is a baseball field in Rochester, New York where the Rochester Red Wings play. It was built in 1996 and seats approximately 12,500.
The Red Wings previously played in Silver Stadium from 1929-1996.
The facility, although always intended as primarily a baseball facility, was constructed to be able to accommodate the Rochester Raging Rhinos A-League Soccer team as well; the Rhinos played there from 1996 until 2005. The Rochester Rattlers Major League Lacrosse team also played at Frontier for two years. As of 2006, the Rattlers and Rhinos play at the new PAETEC Park, and Frontier Field is now used exclusively for baseball and special events. The Red Wings are making upgrades to the park to make it a better baseball environment as a result. A new video-board was installed in time for the 2006 season, and following the season a new grass turf will be installed to replace the grass that has been beat up over the years from extensive use in baseball, soccer, and lacrosse.
Frontier Field hosted the Triple-A All-Star Game on 12 July 2000 [1].
Members of a group called "Rochester Paranormal Investigations" allege that the field is haunted by ghosts [2]. These claims, which most of the Red Wings front office consider dubious, were featured in a Sportscenter feature on Halloween, 2005. There was also an article placed on ESPN's website discussing Frontier Field's possible haunting.
Frontier Field is named for Frontier Communications, which is the primary telephone company in Rochester.
