Alpha Kappa Nu according to history was the first african-american greek letter fraternity. [1] It was founded at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The membership roster of Alpha Kappa Nu included, James Knight, Howard Thompson, E.B. Keemer, Fred Williamson, John Hodge, Thomas Reynolds, Mr. Hill, R.A. Roberts, and Gordon Merill. [2] According to Dr. Walter Kimbrough, Alpha Kappa Nu paved the way for similiar organizations. [3] Generally the fraternity has been stated to have been started in 1903, but there has been accounts that it was founded in 1904. [4] It is also the first black fraternity to own it's house. [5]. Alpha Kappa Nu was founded with the purpose of "strengthen the negro voice" [6] "in the University and the City." [7] The organization thru 2 sources Thomas Clark and the Daily Student (the student newspaper at the time) to have lasted for several years and is said to have lasted till longest 1911 [8] when Kappa Alpha Psi was founded. There has been some speculation that Alpha Kappa Nu is the forrunner of Kappa Alpha Psi. [9] Alpha Kappa Nu became defunct when it was didn't have enough registrants for its organization. [10]
