Samuel Youd

Samuel Youd (s. Lancashire, Englanti, 12. helmikuuta 1922) on kirjailijanimellään John Christopher tunnettu tieteiskirjailija. Youd käsittelee romaaneissaan usein raunioitunutta maata, kuten tieteiskirjailijat H. G. Wells ja John Wyndham, ja hän kuuluu brittiläisen katastrofiromaanin perinteeseen. Monessa Youdin keromuksessa Maata kohtaa tai on kohdannut valtava tuho. Hänen tunnetuin teoksensa on Tripodien aika -trilogia, jossa nuoret pojat taistelevat Maan valloittaneita ja sen asukkaat orjuuttaneita tripodeja vastaan.
Youd palveli brittiarmeijassa 1941-1946 ja taisteli toisen maailmansodan loppuvaiheessa Saksan länsirintamalla. Hänen ensimmäinen romaaninsa oli vuonna 1949 ilmestynyt The Winter Swan. Youdin teokset olivat suosituimmillaan 1950- ja 1960-luvulla, jolloin hän kirjoitti esimerkiksi romaanin Nälkäkuolema (The Death Of Grass). Vuonna 1966 Youd alkoi kirjoittaa nuortenkirjoja, ja loi muun muassa Tripodit-trilogian. 1980-luvulla tripodeista kertova TV-sarja palautti Youdin yleiseen tietoisuuteen.
