Though not my photo, I have sought and received permission from Egyptoloist Justine James to use this picture that she had originally uplaoded to Flickr with a CC license.
Longer description: Egypt: Abydos View from the top of the remains of the pyramid of Ahmose (18th Dynasty) looking toward the mountains. Nearby is the Islamic cemetery. Rectangular enclosures are constructed of mudbrick and then infilled with graves as necessary. New enclosures are usually only added when they are needed, but when Steve began work in this area in the mid-1990s there was a sudden explosion in the construction of the mudbrick enclosures in an attempt to maintain control of the land in that area. I don't believe any of the new enclosures have been used for burial and, hopefully, the local residents are becoming more sympathetic to the need for site preservation - especially out here in the desert so far from cultivable land. Original photo lightly re-touched in PhotoShop to improves levels and contrast.
