[modifier] T-80 light tank
First, I mistakenly tell that T-80 had 2 persons crew. It had 3 actually: tank driver in the hall, gunlayer in the turret on the right side and tank commander/loader in the turret on the left sight. It was built at the base of T-70 M. So main differences T-80 from T-70 are new bigger turret (2 persons). It was also bigger:
Dimension | T-70 | T-80 |
---|---|---|
Combat weight, tonnes | 9.8 | 11.6 |
length, mm | 4285 | 4420 |
width, mm | 2420 | 2500 |
height, mm | 2035 | 2175 |
road clearance, mm | 300 | 300 |
Due it's bigger weight, it had new engine GAZ-11 (6 cylinder, in-line, carburettor, liquid cooling, 2 x 85 hp at 3600 rpm) instead of T-70 GAZ-203 engine. Chassis was similar. Armour was thicker (front hull 35-40 mm, side hull 25, rear hull 15-25, top and bottom hull 10-15, turret 35 mm). Cannon and machine guns were also similar, but T-80 had 94 cannon rounds (instead of 70 in T-70) and 1008 MG rounds instead of 945. Road speed was almost similar (47 kph vs 45 kph T-70).
Important difference was new system of gun placing. T-70 and T-80 were both infantry tank, they could fight in towns, so they should fire at upper floors. So, T-80 has bigger cannon elevation — 65°
Main constructor was N.A. Astrov (Николай Александрович Астров) (he also was main constructor of T-29, amphibious T-38 and T-40 and light T-30, T-60 and T-70). See ru:Астров, Николай Александрович.Bilou 16 mai 2005 à 13:05 (CEST)
