En décembre 2004, le ministre de la défense Hoon a annoncé une restructuration de l'armée britannique, notamment la réduction d'un bataillon écossais et la fusion de tous les régiments écossais en une seule entité.
Cette nouvelle a provoqué une émotion certaine en Écosse; le journal The Scotsman mena une campagne pour éviter cette restructuration.
Fin 2006, The Royal Regiment of Scotland comportera 7 bataillons (5 d'active (n° 1 à 5) et 2 de réserve (n° 6 et 7)):
- The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- The Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
- 51st Highland, 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
