Saint Roger

One knows few things on the life of holy Roger (of Italian san Ruggiero ). It was undoubtedly born towards 1060 in the Italian city from Cannes, in Apulie (Cane della Battaglia), from which he was a bishop. One locates his death in 1138. He lived at the time where the city was mainly destroyed by the invasions Normans of XIe century (1083). Cannes was little by little abandoned, until its final annexation at the city close to Barletta (1303). It is that the inhabitants of Barletta had largely anticipated this annexation: towards 1275, they concealed in the cathedral of Cannes several crowned objects, a large bell, a episcopal throne out of marble and the relics of Roger saint. In 1276, the pope Innocent V obliged them with all to restore, except for the relics. Those are always venerated in Barletta, in the church of San Ruggiero. Festival : January 5.
