[edit] Sherlock Holmes template

I deleted your Sherlock Holmes template a few minutes ago as requested, but I like the idea. Did you know that User:Ludraman has a long time interest in Holmes. Not only that, but he's also gifted with Wikipedia coding, maybe you should try to team up with him on this one, or just leave a request on his talk page. Mgm|(talk) 19:41, Dec 6, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Atlas Award

How odd, I haven't seen anything quite like that before. I spend most of my time on there (and elsewhere) fishing funny stuff out and cataloging it.--Lucky13pjn 23:14, Dec 6, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Holmes

Just saw your note - I'd love to! I especially like the template idea, maybe do it something like the template at the bottom of the County Tipperary article... Anyway, I'm excited about Wikipedia:WikiProject Holmes too, so I'm making it there as of now. Join in! JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 09:34, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Wikproject is now up and running! JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 09:49, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
A Wikiproject is just a project Wikipedians make to improve a set of articles. They define goals, what will be done when, what has been done, examples of good articles in that area, spit out ideas for those articles and so on. And yes, adding it to Wikipedia:WikiProject would be a good idea. JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 09:55, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I've started on the template at Wikipedia:WikiProject Holmes/temp. The stuff above the template is some of what needs to be put in. Cheers, JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 10:08, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Template

At Wikipedia:WikiProject Holmes/temp I've done as much as I can on the template: any suggestions? JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 13:03, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Originally, I did seperate them but I found that it made the template much bigger, and it's big enough as it is! Feel free to mess around with it, though. JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 17:14, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
You probably haven't heard of it because they weren't written by Arthur Conan Doyle, they were written by his son. I think we should separate Arthur Conan Doyle's works and other works in the template, though. JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 17:59, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: The sandbox

It is an interesting idea, but the moving of a major page or the creation of a new namespace/test area should really be discussed by a wider segment of the community before going ahead (little old me isn't much of an authority ;). The last time someone altered the sandbox without discussion (moving it to "Wikipedia:Test area" on the grounds that a "sandbox" isn't intuitive enough for UK/European users), the alteration was quickly reversed. I know there's already talk going on at the pump, but it doesn't seem all that constructive, and not many users have weighed in. I'm concerned that such a Sandbox: space would create an even greater mess for the janitor types to clean up: As IMSoP mentioned, testing things like redirects and page moves can already be (and is encouraged to be) done at the test:Wikipedia, so perhaps there isn't really a need to alter the status quo, since there's a whole wiki newbies can mess with. Don't let me stand in your way though; it sounds promising, and all I ask is that you offer your ideas to the community for comment beforehand, as even editing a template like test would be a fairly major thing. Cheers, -- Hadal 03:02, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki 1.4

I am not one of the developers, but by lurking at the technical mailinglist I read that Brion Vibber plans to roll out MW1.4 within this year. Maybe after the arbitration election is finished? The reason for the current slowdown I have no idea - http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=Wikipedia_Status don't say much except that we are low on Apache work power - but that was the case for the last days already, but earlier it seemed like the wikipedia died. andy 20:12, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Alleged forgery

Gabriel, I have nothing to change or add to what I've already said. If you want to make a complaint, go right ahead. I'm sure the admins will be very impressed that you have wasted so much time on this forgery that was not a forgery. For your information I am aware of the talk page policy to which you referred. I have learned its limits and I hope that you can too. Gazpacho 11:14, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for watching, but there was no forgery. Move along. Maybe my web browser crashed, maybe I wanted to notify the user before any more articles were vandalized. I don't remember, don't care, and don't wish to discuss it any further. Posting ultimatums as a first resort is a lousy way to engage editors constructively, so please don't do it anymore. Gazpacho 11:32, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mary Russell

Good point about Mary Russell being in the template, but I don't think it matters a huge ammount either way. I was thinking though, of making one ACD template (Stories, places, characters) and one non-ACD template (authors, stories etc.) instead of the one big one. What do you think? JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 11:28, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yes I am admin: I get to see the wonderful admin bar on the top of my page;) :

Yay!

[edit] Sandbox

Error wasn't intentional. New to Wiki and asked for help with a disambiguity page and to be quite honest, still don't know how to go about setting it up, even after being directed to the sandbox page. Revmachine21 11:34, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Gabriel, I've been looking at the conversation you're having with DrZoidberg. Realize that you can't force anyone to make sense, or post replies only on your talk page. If you don't like someone's style of discussion, then stop discussing with them. Stay cool. There are more sensible things you can do with your time here than keeping up conversation with people that you think are being foolish or impolite. Unless you and DrZoidberg get into a dispute over an actual article, there's nothing going on here that would warrant a formal complaint or mediation. Zoidberg is a bit of a wildcard, but if he wants to do weird things in the sandbox, let him. Nobody expects the sandbox to make sense. Don't get worked up over this. JRM 13:16, 2004 Dec 12 (UTC)

In the interest of effective communication, I was using wording most likely to appeal to him, not you. It did not reflect my personal opinion of your requests. After all, it would be quite unlikely for me to have any success in convincing him if I basically said "Gabriel is right, so just do as he says", no matter how much that may apply. Diplomacy is a subtle art; one that needs a delicate handling of the truth. :-) JRM 13:39, 2004 Dec 12 (UTC)
Hi. I'm replying on your talkpage!! Now where was I? Ah, yes... Isn't the sandbox supposed to be the place where nonsense goes? If you're annoyed by the contents of the sandbox, then don't read it. DrZoidberg 14:20, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Coloured text

To add coloured text, just use standard HTML markup. However, you should make sure to only use colour sparingly in regular articles. And yes, colours are allowed in signatures, by going into your preferences, under "user data", and adding the HTML markup for coloured text to your "nickname for signatures" there. Hope that helps. Denelson83 23:52, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hangman in the sandbox

So that means you can't stop me from putting the game back every time you delete it!

  • 1) There is more than one person playing. There is only one person trying to delete it (ie. you). Please be nice to us, and don't delete our game just because you don't like it.
  • 2) If we can do what we want in the sandbox, then I can put the game back if I want every time you delete it. DrZoidberg 17:23, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • One question... When you deleted my hangman game you mentioned in your edit summary: I'LL DO THIS FOR LONGER THAN YOU!!! Are you seriously trying to make the sandbox a better place, or are you just trying to pick a fight with me? Personally, I don't like fights. DrZoidberg 17:32, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
      • You are free to edit anything, just like we are. If you want to add something else to the sandbox, feel free to do so. I'm just asking that you be courteous and don't delete a work in progress.
        • Um, OK, but I fail to see the lesson here. Come to think of it, that kind of kills the whole point of a lesson, now, doesn't it? :-) DrZoidberg 17:42, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
          • We're on Vandalism in progress for using the sandbox? There's a new one... DrZoidberg 18:04, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
            • I did write there!! Please push the Refresh button on your browser (Reload for Netscape users) or press F5. DrZoidberg 18:20, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
              • Quote by Gabriel Webber: "I can't do anything forcibly over the Internet." I have put my side of the story there. I have a funny feeling that no matter what I do, you won't be satisfied. DrZoidberg 18:26, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
                • May I also refer you to a comment by User:JRM: "Realize that you can't force anyone to make sense, or post replies only on your talk page. If you don't like someone's style of discussion, then stop discussing with them." DrZoidberg 18:33, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sorry DrZoidberg, I agree with Gabriel. As a very new user it is very annoying getting edit conflicts when just trying a few edits. Please take your game elsewhere. --192.156.101.3 17:51, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hangman

Actually, the Hangman game is getting more people to edit than normally would. Also, when you wipe out the sandbox every 3 minutes, people's edits are disappearing, and that is definitely something that will discourage editing. DrZoidberg 17:52, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  1. The edit conflicts are not caused by my game, they're caused by you constantly clearing the sandbox
  2. As for take it or leave it, I'll choose option #2.
  • OK. But you can't complain if I decide to put the game back sometime in the future. Remember what you said? "it's the sandbox, where people can do what they like". DrZoidberg 18:03, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Actually, you complained to me about the game. Look at your first message to me today. But if I misunderstood you then I'll make you a deal. I can do whatever I want in the sandbox, and so can you. DrZoidberg 18:09, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
      • Deal. Although constantly deleting the game and making me put it back just makes the game last a lot longer. If you leave the game there and let it finish, it ends a lot faster. Just a suggestion though :-) DrZoidberg 18:15, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
        • I do have a reason. If it's on a different page, no one will bother to go there, and therefore less (if any) players. If people see it in the sandbox, they will jump right in and play. More fun for everyone!! But that's just my opinion. We're all entitled to one. DrZoidberg 18:20, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm just going to mention it once here on your talk page, 'cause it's directed mostly at you Gabriel, but I'm sure DrZoidberg will read it also should he come here to respond to something else. I just want to point out that by blanking the Sandbox you keep violating the Three revert rule as stated in the Wikipedia policy (Behavior Guidelines). Now I realize that maybe you feel that it was justified and such, or doesn't apply to the sandbox, or it was something you needed to do to get rid of "vandalisim", but specifically in the Three revert rule where it describes some exception to the rule, it says, "This exception does not apply to reversions of well-established users just because you consider their edits to be "vandalism."" I'm not condoning DrZoidberg's actions, I've already suggested in the Vandalisim in progress talk page that DrZoidberg create a subpage for his Hangman game. The only reason I'm posting this is because I don't want you to get in trouble for violating the Three revert rule when you're only causing a minor irritation to DrZoidberg and others (myself not included as I am no longer playing the game in that location, however, should it move to a more appropriate place, I may consider joining in again.) I do not think it is unreasonable to have a link in the Sandbox (perhaps in the template text of the 'static header' for example) to a Hangman subpage. Then again, I'm just new here.--Kyrin\talk 18:48, 2004 Dec 16 (UTC)

  • But it's not on the main sandbox page! Nobody's playing! (runs off and cries) DrZoidberg 15:28, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • But when the game is on the main sandbox page everyone plays! DrZoidberg 15:30, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
      • If the game stays on the main sandbox page, people will see the game and be more willing to join in. People won't bother to go to a different page to play! So in conclusion, yes, I can blame you :-P DrZoidberg 15:36, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
        • I agree. It is hard playing Hangman with edit conflicts when you're reverting the page every 20 seconds. But the main point here is that if someone sees the game in action, they will jump in and play. If they just see a link to it, they won't be as interested. DrZoidberg 15:40, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
          • IDEA! Why don't you play Hangman? It's fun! Even more fun than an asylum!! DrZoidberg 15:46, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
            • Oh, and just to clarify, "THAT'S IT! BACK TO WINNIPEG!" is a quote from The Simpsons. Although I have been to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and it is a nice place, even without an asylum. DrZoidberg 15:48, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
              • Well I do have an objection to your objection to me playing it in the sandbox!! DrZoidberg 15:52, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
              • If your goals are to build an encyclopedia, you'd have better things to do than delete every single edit I make. Q.E.D!!!!!!!!!! DrZoidberg 15:56, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
                • Monopoly in the sandbox? That's a great idea!! Why didn't I think of that before? Thanks! DrZoidberg 16:01, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
                  • I don't think my comments are silly! "Silly" is a very vague word anyway. What one person considers silly another may not. DrZoidberg 17:42, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] test

I usually do, but the history page works especially when I don't have any additional comments. Wikipedia:Dealing with vandalism don't recommend either option. And your "welcome" is a bit tardy but thanks :) 68.81.231.127 09:21, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

True. I always do during actual discussions, or when adding a comment; templates feel more like editing an article. 68.81.231.127 09:30, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You've got your answer at Wikipedia:Reference desk, BTW.

[edit] Mediation

Hi, I'm currently inactive on the Mediation Committee, but you can request another mediator helps at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation if you are still having problems with DrZoidberg. Angela. 21:36, Dec 19, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] sandbox

Why did you remove the games links from the sandbox header? If you see my talkpage and [[User talk:DrZoidberg|DrZoidberg's talkpage, you'll see it is essential. Also, please reply on my talkpage to this message.--Gabriel (internal ID number: 118170) 09:27, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC) [pasted from my talk page --Korath会話]

Because discussion in Template talk:Sandbox, which is the proper place to discuss changes, shows a clear consensus that the message must be clear and concise. This is one of the first pages a new wikipedian sees (and should be the first he edits); it should thus concentrate on drawing users into Wikipedia proper.
I've only glanced at the messages on your and DrZoidberg's talk pages; your insistence on splitting message and response between separate pages makes the conversation wholly illegible to anyone else. The watchlist is the proper tool for monitoring a conversation. Further discussion should go to Template talk:Sandbox, but if you insist on replies being placed on your talk page, either post yours here as well, or don't expect anyone else to attempt to read them. --Korath会話 22:01, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Recent Changes patrol

It's turned off by default. And check the "raw signature" box in your preferences so you'll stop creating broken sigs. -- Cyrius| 18:32, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure exactly why RC patrol is off by default. I know that Brion VIBBER has said he thinks it's silly, but I don't know if there's any technical problems with it. I'd guess that the developers want to hammer out some of the many other problems they have before turning on something optional that may have its own. -- Cyrius| 17:11, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
