Interested Wikipedians moved

This section was moved to our new WikiProject page, participants section:
Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Participants_and_primary_areas_of_interest

Please go there and look over our new WikiProject and update your primary areas of interest (I guessed based on what I knew of you).

I will be moving the rest of this page over to the WikiProject shortly.

We really need more people outside BSA involved in our project. Please let them know if you know of anyone who may be interested. Rlevse 13:11, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject being created now

Create a WikiProject --Ed 16:56, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Or a WikiCollaboration. I can see either one. Rlevse 17:44, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm all for a WikiProject Scouting, but one that's more inclusive than the BSA - make the BSA into a sub project, get some ladies to contribute to Girl Scouts/Girl Guides, etc etc. --JohnDBuell 18:32, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Scouting portal

If you go to the Stargate SG-1 article, there is a portal link, if you go to the Morocco article, there is a portal link, there are now a great number of Scouting articles of all varieties, would a portal for Scouting be a good idea? Thanks Chris 23:12, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Here is the link of all the current portals that exist on Wikipedia. Does everyone thinks it would be an appropriate addition to the ones listed there? Also, see Wikipedia:Portal#How_to_create_a_new_portal --Naha|(talk) 23:48, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
This has definite possibilities. The question would be the scope...my main concern is whether we can get enough users knowledgeable about Scouting outside of the USA to work the non-BSA topics. Of the people on our list so far, I think (not sure) only two fall into that category (Jergen and Kintetsubuffalo). Rlevse 23:54, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, there's certainly an expert on Polish Scouts here somewhere: Polish Scouts rank insignia. Nice layout. Looking at Category:Scouting, there are also articles on Canada, Hong Kong and the UK, and the GSUSA. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 02:13, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

True, I'm sure they're out there, but I was referring the users currently listed in the "Interested Wikipedians" section of this page. Rlevse 02:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

VOTE

Here's my vote for the type and scope of this:

a Scouting Portal (not project or collaboration)
there are 4 Wikipedia:Featured_portals...I like the layout of the Portal:Constructed languages best, with the Portal:Cricket one a close second; but I'd make the color bars a a dark blue/purple like in the international emblem. I think we should include the whole Scouting movement, not just BSA. You can view all portals at Portal:Browse, with a directory at Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. If people want, I'll start the portal and be the coordinator. If people prefer otherwise and/or someone else wants to do it, that's fine too. So far, most of us seem interested in this are Americans, so I see the BSA section getting the most work --in the beginnings at least, but there are others who can and desire to work on Scouting and Guiding in other countries. We should call it Portal:Scouting or Portal:Scouting and Guiding. Portals can have projects associated with them. One option is to have a portal with projects under it such as BSA, Scouting in Europe, Scouting in Asia, etc. I'd also like feedback on when to kick this off. YIS, Randy Rlevse 17:19, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Support - I like the layout of both of the ones you have chosen. This sounds like a good proposal, I'm all for it! Also, I think the title should just be "Scouting" as opposed to "Scouting and Guiding." --Naha|(talk) 21:19, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Project & Portal status

Project creation in progess as of 19 Jan 06.

I have made the project notice template (goes at the top of all articles). Please start placing it at the top of all Scouting articles. The To-Do page is at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/Todo (simply a list of things needed to be done)--feel free to add to it (or any other part of our project). I am in the process of moving this (Gadget850's) talk page to here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Scouting, with the agreed upon rules and standards at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/RulesStandards (let's stick to them, okay; and if there are new proposal's, discuss them on the RulesStandards' talk page. If anyone objects, please speak up before we get too far down the road. I could have put the rules on the main project page, but realized it'd be a big section. Rlevse 13:18, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

note userbox negativity

Folks, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Userboxes/Interests and scroll down to that new userbox, the World Badge with the slash across it. Does that not seem to be a slam on Scouting, as per "All items in template space are governed by the civility policy." on Wikipedia:Userboxes#How to make a Userbox? I have posted a request for explanation at User talk:Alex43223.

Further, because not all Scouts are members of WOSM or WAGGGS, I've created a related userbox template that is non-specific to any organization.

(ps-I used a defunct and generic Scout fleur-de-lis so as to avoid any trouble with copyright, just like they did for the bald eagle rather than the badge for the Eagle Scout userbox)

What do you think? And if there is a way to incorporate a Girl Guide trefoil, that's great!

Chris 03:01, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about the civility policy, but I always thought "Once a Scout, always a Scout" (assuming you were not kicked out for some sort of misbehavior or something). So, I'm not sure why they feel the need to differentiate between "Scout" and "Former Scout" with 2 different userboxes? I do like your new box though :) --Naha|(talk) 06:40, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Chris, good catch on the userbox with the 'no' symbol. I can see where some would think it's anti-Scouting and where some it may possibly mean 'I was registered as a Scout, but am not registered now'. I am glad you asked for clarification. I think if it means 'I'm not registered now', the symbol should be redone. Yes, the tone should be civil, and yes, Naha, the vast majority of Scouts always have Scouting with them in some way.

Chris: have you thought of moving your two userboxs into the main wiki section? Rlevse 12:39, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

I have also asked for clarification also on the talk page of the userbox. If I hear nothing in a decent amount of time, I'm changing the graphic to something more suitable, maybe Image:Hatcombine.jpg. Or conversely I could add "The template below has been proposed for deletion. See templates for deletion to help reach a consensus on what to do." Chris 20:46, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Randy, if you want to pull them out of my workshop and put them in an appropriate Wiki section, please do. I'm not entirely sure how to or where to. Note-I can't find the Eagle Scout one's location. Note also my two boxes predate the circle-and-slash variant. Chris 16:57, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Chris, I've made userboxes and templates out of your workshop templates. They are called "Template:User ScoutGuide" ("User Scout" was taken by ...) and "Template:User ScoutTrade". You may or may not want to delete your workshop stuff. I'll notify users linked to them they should change to the userboxes. Randy, 19:44, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
It's fixed, he meant no offense, we can cut out most of this section if it's too bulky, now. Chris 05:53, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, the original creator of the userbox may have meant no offense, but now there is a whole other issue going on at Template talk:User Scout-former. I am not going to argue BSA policy with anyone, that's not why I'm here, but I think the userbox seriously needs to pick a side, if it is against Scouting, it needs openly to say so. If it isn't, it needs to ditch the negative graphic that has once again been put back on the box. Chris 01:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Wood Badge userbox

While not directly related to this article, I thought this was the best place to announce this, so please bear with me. I've created a "Wood Badger Wikipedians" category and userbox (I'm a 3-bead Wood Badger). You can just place that category on your user page if you want or add the userbox to your userbox list, which will also add you to the category. See my userpage for an example if you like. The userbox is in the Interests listing of userboxes because that's where the Scouting one is. While I use the Eagle Scout userbox, I can't find it in the userbox listings. Does anyone know it is listed? I may move the Wood Badger one there?Rlevse 14:27, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

More userboxes

There are two other user boxes now (moved from Chris' workshop); one called "Template:User ScoutGuide" and one called "Template:User ScoutTrade". See my userpage for samples. They are listed in the Userbox/Interest/Outdoor section of the userbox listings.Rlevse 21:45, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey look what I found

Looks like some merging needs to happen. We have two article about the same thing: Cub Scouts and Cub Scouts of America. Also, Wolf Cub currently redirects to Cub Scouts. As of right now, Cub Scouts looks to be the larger of the two articles. --Naha|(talk) 21:32, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

I need a nap. These are not the same articles. Sorry. Nothing to see here, move along... --Naha|(talk) 21:35, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Scoutpedia, The Scouting Encyclopedia

On the Scouting main article, there is a link for

but when I clicked on it, I got "Database error From Scoutpedia A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "LinkCache::addLinkObj". MySQL returned error "1016: Can't open file: 'page.ibd' (errno: 1) (localhost)"." Can anyone else get into it, and what is it precisely? Chris 21:03, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I got the same error. Rlevse 13:15, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I've worked out a similar error and some solutions. Check my notes page see if that helps. http://notes.homelinux.org/index.php/Software/Wiki/Errors . --Iain 21:21, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
