Taken from the Claddagh basin (at the end of the Eglinton Canal) with back to the Claddagh. In the immediate foreground is the Basin (dock) itself, then the river Corrib, then the Spanish Parade. The Spanish Arch to the right is one of the few remaining sections of the City Wall. (In the medieval period, Galway's major trade was with western France and (especially) northern Spain. The flashing eyes and dark hair of Galway girls is reputedly the result of Spanish ancestry.)
The buildings in the middle distance are (expensive!) apartment blocks beside the popular Quay Street area. In the distance, the dome of the grotesquely ugly 1960s Cathedral can be seen "looming like a squat toad over the river" - (Rough Guide).
