[edit] Galveston City Limits
In my earliest memories (1960s) The City Galveston's western city limit was around 80th Street (not all the way to the west end of the seawall). I have been told that the city limits moved westward many times before then. The earliest western boundary I have heard of was 45th Street. During the 1970s, the City Council began annexing westward a few chunks at a time. Jamaica Beach, which was at the time only a subdivision in Galveston County, saw the handwriting on the wall and incorporated as a village in order to prevent the City of Galveston from annexing the land there. Eventually the city annexed all the way to San Luis Pass. Annexation of the whole island was quite a controversy at the time, primarily because the City of Galveston was unable immediately to provide services such as water and police protection. At the time, the Galveston County Sherriff's Department refused to patrol any part of the island that was within the Galveston city limits.--Ettamd 21:18, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
