Gary Schmidt

Gary D. Schmidt (born 1957) is an American children's writer of nonfiction books as well as some novels, the most notable being Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, winner of the 2005 Newbery Honor citation, and First Boy. He lives on a farm in Alto, Michigan, and is a Professor of English at Calvin College.
In 2005, he collaborated on a children's book, "In God's Hand" with Jewish author Lawrence Kushner and illustrator Matthew Baek.
He lives with his wife, Elizabeth Stickney and his six children on his 150-year-old farm.

His favorite hymn is "This is my Father's World". He has been known to get misty-eyed when he hears his favorite verse "in the rustling grass, I hear Him pass".
One of his favorite past-times is playing the card game "Euchre". Friends and colleagues are still baffled by this, as he consistently loses.
