Gate 88 is a multiplayer action real-time strategy (RTS) game where the player pilots a ship in 2D, asteroids style, while building structures such as turrets, factories, and research stations in an effort to destroy other's bases while protecting their own.
The game is similar to the game Homeworld, in that it takes place in both RTS and single-player sci-fi shooter. It is a great proof of concept, because it is completely playable and has a unique world which could be expanded upon. It also offers multiplayer capacity over LAN and the Internet via public servers. Other notable features include the unique user interface that allows players to pilot their ship while performing strategic operations.
The game is released as freeware by Queasy Games and is available for Linux, Mac and Windows. It may one day be open-sourced, but for now, the developer is keeping it closed in order to have more control over his artistic vision. [1]
