Gates of horn and ivory
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gates of horn and ivory, in Virgil's Aeneid, are the portals in Elysium through which dreams come to the living world. The gate of horn is the path which dreams that are true travel; false dreams emanate through the gate of ivory.
The gates appear in Neil Gaiman's comic book series The Sandman.
In The Other Side of the Hedge, a short story by E. M. Forster, the main character of the story observes two gates, one of horn and another of ivory. This story is usually read as a metaphor of death and Heaven.
